Alumni of Imperial College and predecessor colleges and institutes, including City & Guilds College Association members Professor Suzannah Lipscomb (spokesperson) is an historian, author, broadcaster, and award-winning professor of history at the University of Roehampton. A Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, her research focuses on the sixteenth century, both on English and French history, and she is especially interested in the intersection of religious, gender, political, social, and psychological history; in ordinary women's lives, faith, marriages, and sexuality; and in witchcraft and witch-trials.On this 20-week course we will explore the history and practise of magic, spell-craft and the occult from ancient times to the present day. We will learn about witches, fairies, shamans and fortune-tellers, as well as beliefs in curses and ghosts, protective talisman and superstitious fears associated with the occult. Each week we will examine a key theme in the history of magic, assess its place in different cultures around the world, and consider how the theme has changed over time. We will also look at the place of magic and the occult in art, literature and popular culture, from the fairy tales of the Grimm Brothers, to the wizardry of Harry Potter. Our research-led teaching is combined with practical experiences such as field trips and monthly meetings with our Centre for Magic and Esotericism. Her early research focused on the figure of the uninvited guest (or "party-crasher") in medieval Arabic literature, and especially on the 11th-century work Ḥikāyat Abī l-Qāsim, the subject of her monograph, Ḥikāyat Abī l-Qāsim: A Literary Banquet(Edinburgh University Press, 2016). She also co-edited and translated this text with Professor Geert Jan van Gelder: The Portrait of Abū l-Qāsim al-Baghdādī al-Tamīmī(Gibb Memorial Trust, 2021).
