The art (by Satoshi Shiki) is much better than Isayma's, and some of the stars I gave this book are due to that. It's pleasant to look at and easy to read through, and though the story itself is kind of cliche it has been used over and over again (girl befriends socially shunned boy, etc.) because it is entertaining and gives you some reason to care what happens to the characters. That's not to say the prequel is bad, it just tells a much more personal and self-contained narrative that serves to flesh out the lesser explored elements of the main series such as who was the first person to ever kill a titan, how the survey corps were formed and how the three dimensional odm gear they use to kill titans was invented. Unable to match the overwhelming force of the Titans, humanity was forced to sail to a new world. At this time, most of humanity had been annihilated, but the majority of this was at the hands of their fellow humans.
