About this deal

The main advantages of spaying are preventing pregnancy, preventing infection of the uterus ( pyometra), preventing ovarian or uterine cancer and reducing the likelihood of mammary (breast) cancer, all of which can be life-threatening. It also prevents the inconvenience of having a bitch in season with unwanted attention from male dogs. Apparently Angie, it is normal for a dog having just been spayed to be a bit groggy after the op and a couple of days after. In Sweden, until 2012 it was illegal to spay a bitch (other than for a medical reason). Although that law has now been slightly relaxed, a study during that time showed that approximately 25% of bitches will have had pyometra ( Figure 1) by the time they reach 10 years of age ( Egenvall et al, 2001). Since pyometra is a potentially life-threatening illness, which can be prevented by spaying, this in itself may provide an argument for recommending spaying for all bitches. The British Veterinary Association (BVA) published a policy document in 2014 which ‘strongly supports the practice of …spaying of bitches’ ( www.bva.co.uk/News-campaigns-and-policy/policy/Companion…/Neutering/). The policy document listed the benefits of spaying as: avoiding the potential distress of pseudopregnancy, removing the risk of pyometra, reducing the risk of mammary tumours and the cessation of oestrus (thus obviating the need for seclusion of a bitch while in heat). After calling dogsitters, vets and even kennel places... I ended up calling the breeder of the dog I mated my Rosie with last year. I thought, as she has both (obviously, as she is a breeder) she might have something that works for her. There is no way on Earth that bitch spray could ever in anyway ever be used to stop a dog the bitch lives with noticing that she is in season. It’s very variable between individuals and breeds. Generally, small breed dogs start cycling in the spring around 6 months, whereas large or giant breeds might not come into season until 18 months or so.

Nothing will mask that smell. Just trust them together till he gives you any sign he is starting to get a bit 'jiggy'. Then seperate them, taking it in turns to be in solitary confinement and with the family ;-)

This is such a useful defence tool to protect our beloved pets against those that are not in control of their own dogs! Couldn’t recommend highly enough and worth Every penny! I have an 11 month old chocolate labrador. We have decided to have her spayed in January (she has had one season) as our previous labrador died at 10 years old when she developed mamory cancer. It was a terrible end for her as we operated but it was too late and spread to her liver. We never had puppies from her and she did suffer a couple of womb infections so because of this we have decided to spay our bitch Millie. In one hand it seems sad to take away her bits and pieces but on the other we are not going to breed from her so why take the risk of her developing cancer or suffering with her womb. Hope this helps others. At most it could maybe have a use to allow a bitch to take a short walk on lead past a dogs house and maybe keep him from getting too excited. Keep collections to yourself or inspire other shoppers! Keep in mind that anyone can view public collections - they may also appear in recommendations and other places. Thanks for all of you for the advice, I knew you were all right, I was just trying to find the answer that doesn't exist (other than spayed). Her stitches came out yesterday, our vet used modern stitches like the ones used in hospitals, after 10 days. She to avoid jumping and rolling for a few more days, though.

Yes - I've also been told by some male owners that dogs are so familiar with some of the sprays, they are as 'tuned in' to the sprays as they are a bitch in season (how true this is I don't know) - but I certainly wouldn't risk taking an in season bitch away. Should the entire reproductive tract be removed (ovariohysterectomy) or just the ovaries (ovariectomy)? Various studies have shown that spaying can increase the relative risk of various cancers, such as osteosarcoma, mast cell tumour, lymphosarcoma and haemangiosarcoma ( Hoffman et al, 2013; Howe, 2015), and also increases the risk of bone and joint disease such as cranial cruciate ligament rupture ( Wilke, et al, 2002; Torres de la Riva et al, 2013). However, it is important to bear in mind that these increases in risk are small, and amount to a few percent rise in the incidence of these diseases. It is also important to bear in mind that there are very likely breed-specific relative risks ( Torres de la Riva et al, 2013), and we cannot at present generalise on risks for all dog breeds. It is also worth noting that all of these findings are retrospective studies and cannot reliably demonstrate a causal link between spaying and risk of developing health problems.I have to say I have always been sceptical and have never used them. But now with this incredible bad timing I am desperate. oh I know this isn't very helpful but can you maybe just re-arrange your holiday at all? nellie was good to go out again on about day 23 so it wouldn't be post-ponig it by much. Please, please don't spray on her "nether regions" the spray stings like anything and will not cover up the scent of a bitch in full season. No, your pug is definitely not too old to be spayed at 1.5 years, although your vet may want to wait until 2 or 3 months after her second season if it is due soon. I would advise discussing all the pros and cons of the operation with your vet, but I personally think that the pros will greatly outweigh the cons.
