My personal impression is the main contractor is just trying to be difficult, as I can see no benefit in my men wearing Blue, when all the other contractors are wearing yellow or orange. The standard for high viz is BS EN 471 of which there are only three colours classed as high viz. They are orange, yellow and red.

The Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 require many factors to be taken into account to ensure that the correct clothing is chosen for a particular task:Make sure that the garmant is worn fastened at all times to ensure maximum protection and reduce the risk of entanglement with moving machinery etc REST ASSURED Do NOT allow sections to be cut off or removed - the level of protection they provide depends on the areas of fluorescent and retro-reflective materials. Many people get confused (or are unaware) with the meaning of BS EN 417. It is the industry standard for HiVis Clothing and here we will try and explain it in more detail. Do Navy Blue hi vis vests conform to ISO20471 ? No they do not conform to enISO 20471 but are useful to identifying staff or different departments in the workplace. Vest that do conform are usually yellow and orange like these here . Not only does this vest keep the wearer well seen it is also very practical. Velcro fastening segenmted into 2 small strips, means the Navy Blue High Visibility Vest is easy to use while the design also includes reflective tape banding and is it made from 100% polyester. It is therefore essential that any High Visibility garments issued to employees conform to all relevant performance standards (BS EN 471, European standard for High Visibility Clothing),and are worn and maintained correctly for maximum protection. Coloured hi vis vests other than yellow and orange tend not to conform to en iso 20471 as the amount of hi vis material doesnt meet the required visibility tests, but they still have reflective tape andare useful for where en471 isnt a requirement and for identifying staff or departments etc. The only example I can think of is where cleaning staff, or other non construction personnel may require additional care and attention (same thoughts as Alexis) The dirtier the HiVis garment gets, the less effective it becomes. Make sure that garments are washed regularly, or disposed of when permenatly soiled. Some firms, however, choose to assign a colour to particular roles and ranks within the company. Though used to differentiate between staff, the primary function of this product remains for staff to be easily visible and well seen in the workplace.
