About this deal

Among the hell unleashed is a close-knit company of warriors known as ‘Essex Dogs’ who must fight for each other. Dan Jones is one of my top favourite historical authors so “Essex Dogs” was a hugely anticipated release for me. I was delighted to be granted an ARC. This novel is Dans historical fiction debut novel, and is to be part of a trilogy of the same name. Dan Jones'] mastery of his subject matter is obvious. The soldiers' lives are rather brilliantly recreated – the kit, the fighting, the boredom and discomfort.' The Times Swept up in the bloody chaos, a tight-knit company from Essex must stay alive long enough to see their home again. With sword, axe and longbow, the Essex Dogs will fight, from the landing beaches of Normandy to the bloodsoaked field of Crécy. I know Dan as a historian through his non-fiction books and documentaries, but this is his first foray into historical fiction. And what a debut it is! The writing and storyline are top notch and the language used is authentic to the times; which is not always the case with some historical fiction.

Book Review: ‘Essex Dogs,’ by Dan Jones - The New York Times

Horribly compelling... Only Dan Jones can carry you through blood, piss and vomit and leave you wanting more.' Daisy DunnWolves of Winter follows some of the same characters you have already met in Essex Dogs - Loveday, Romford, Scotsman and the rest of the gang - and introduces some more whom I hope you will find memorable. The character's themselves are great! Often with historical fiction it's really difficult not to make your characters feel too modern. But Jones finds the perfect balance, keeping the historical accuracy and still making it easy for a modern audience to empathise with them. The soldiers' lives are rather brilliantly recreated - the kit, the fighting, the boredom and discomfort.' The Times Heading ever deeper into enemy territory toward Crécy, this band of brothers knows they are off to fight a battle that will forge nations, and shape the very fabric of human lives. But first they must survive a bloody war in which rules are abandoned and chivalry itself is slaughtered.

Essex Dogs from Sunday Wolves of Winter: The epic sequel to Essex Dogs from Sunday

It's a great story of visceral battles and violent action, but also of the bonds of comradeship, and the love of brothers. There's Pismire, small enough to infiltrate enemy camps. Scotsman, strong enough to tear down a wall. Millstone, a stonemason who'll do anything to protect his men. Father, a priest turned devilish by the horrors of war. Romford, a talented young archer on the run from his past. And Loveday Fitztalbot, their battle-scarred captain, who just wants to get his boys home safe. It may seem cliched, but Dan Jones has burst onto the fiction scene like Bernard Cornwell reborn. This tale is gritty and humorous, thoughtful and exciting. All the hallmarks of historical fiction at its best. Underpinned by historic realities, and propelled by edge-of-your-seat pace, Essex Dogs thrusts readers to the heart of the Hundred Years’ War that shaped Europe – strap in for a wild ride. Dan Jones is a brilliant storyteller. I’ve loved reading his history for years and now he’s proven to be just as adept at fiction. Few books manage to be as compelling on every level as Essex Dogs: it’s adventure, history, and heart.” —Dana Schwartz, author of Anatomy: A Love Story

And they didn’t just lay siege. They built an entire town of their own in the marsh, as big as any English settlement outside London. Then they settled down to fight for control of Calais - seemingly willing to go to any lengths and incur any cost to take it. I've always enjoyed Dan Jones' history books because of his skill for writing captivating, transporting prose, and those talents are on full display here. The New York Times bestselling historian makes his historical fiction debut with an explosive novel set during the Hundred Years’ War.

A great addition to the field of historical fiction. Bernard Cornwell etc. watch out Dan is coming! Recommended Reads about Race, Racism, and Demarginalizing History - Necessary Non-fiction You Should Read for Life-changing Insights and Impact With a cast of unforgettable characters, written with irrepressible verve and historical accuracy, Dan Jones delivers a compelling novel that thrums with swordswinging energy.' Simon Sebag MontefioreBest Books Set in the 1920s — from Stories That Shimmer with Champagne and Social Change, to Rip-roaring Reads Covering Crime, Colonialism and Beyond. All throughout, the descriptions of France are engaging and easy to follow for those who – like me – are largely unfamiliar with this particular chapter of history. Personally, I discovered the medieval France travelled by the Dogs with a sense of wonder, for Jones’ description of the country left me feeling as though I was discovering a mystical world in a fantasy novel for the first time. Superb historical fiction, as fresh, vivid and vital as this morning’s headlines … proves once again that nothing really changes, be it a soldier’s life – or great storytelling.”—Lee Child

Some men fight for glory. Others fight for coin. The Essex Dogs? They fight for each other. About This Edition ISBN: There’s Pismire, small enough to infiltrate enemy camps. Visceral, thrilling, gripping, this is a wild ride into the hearts and minds of men fighting to the death—and each other. The battles that shaped Europeare seen from the point of view of the soldiers and the lives of ordinary people. Searing.” —Kate Williams, author of The Pleasures of Men and Becoming Queen Victoria If you like a good historical fiction that actually has the facts right and heaps of characterisation, then this is the book for you.The book contains lots of very well drawn characters, each of the Dogs is very distinct, but my favourite was the Earl of Northampton, whose creative cursing is a real highlight, and laugh out loud funny.
