I think Last Bastion is an excellent cooperative game – my group played it four times in a row one night because we were having such a good time – but I don’t like it as much as Ghost Stories. Last Bastion does have a much better rulebook and it plays slightly smoother, but the darker ghost story theme is just so much more interesting to me. Also, the insane challenge that these games throw at you makes more sense in horror-themed games. The players, using teamwork, will have to exorcise the ghosts that appear during the course of the game. At the beginning of his turn, a player brings a ghost into play and places it on a free spot, and more than one can come in at the same time. In Gloom, you play the head of a family and it’s your job to make them as miserable as possible and then shuffle them off this mortal coil! You might poison them or give them crippling debt. Stunning horror artwork and amazing component quality. A different take on horror board games that is fast paced with almost no downtime.

But the game publishers, Bezier Games, have released a free One Night app to talk people through it. The app even includes spooky music!

In Betrayal at House on the Hill, every player, including the traitor, has their own victory goals. If anyone reaches their goals, the game is over, and if any player reaches zero on any of their ‘life energy’ levels, they die. The last ‘living’ player wins unless the traitor gets them first. There 50 unique scenarios in the game. We’ve had to burn a magic book before the traitor got their hands on it, disarm traps placed all around the house and even escape before the traitor alien flies the house into another dimension! There are also harder difficulty levels that add more incarnations of Wu-Feng, in which to win, you must defeat all of them. The game was also a nice length - if it had been longer it would have felt repetitive, but any shorter would have been unsatisfying. The player turns felt well-paced and the objectives were clear. There were meaningful choices throughout and plenty of options available to you every turn. Though we didn't have time to replay it immediately, the whole group is keen to meet up again and play the harder difficulties, which is a great sign. Negatives aside, Ghost Stories is an excellent game. Each player has enough agency on their own turn that I don't think it suffered too much from one player dominating the game, as can happen with some co-ops, though the potential might be there if one player is noticeably more vocal than the others.
