Kids love any excuse to get out the fancy dress box, and Christmas is no exception. If your little one is keen to put on a Nativity at home, or is playing a starring role as Joseph in the school play, look no further for info on how to put together a DIY Joseph costume! Christmas is a great time of year to celebrate and get festive, and what better way to do that than with fancy dress? This idea is inspired by Real Simple’s DIY halloween costume ideas. It may look difficult but it’s is actually pretty easy. We even got one of the Guardian Teacher Network team’s nieces involved – nine-year-old Livvy had great fun. A Joseph costume is one of the easiest costumes to make. Make a plain or stripy tunic (an old striped duvet cover or baggy t-shirt will do) and tie around the waist with a length of rope or a belt. He is most often depicted in a robe with headpiece. He’s one of the three main figures of the Holy Family, along with the Virgin Mary and the Holy Babe. These are versatile costumes for children and for men.

Our favourite is a crown using a paper plate. Get a plate and make a dot in the middle. From there divide the plate into triangles of equal size. Using a pen knife or scissors pierce the middle and cut along the lines of the triangles to make the spikes of your crown. Adults will need to help children with this part. Then, decorate it as you see fit, using paint, colouring in crayons, felt, or gems for added sparkle. Keep collections to yourself or inspire other shoppers!
