I only bought Old Pulteney because someone said to me that it was rather good while Talisker (recommended by everyone) is even better apparently. Regular readers have most likely read our review of Jura Elixir Single Malt Whisky Review, and you’ll know that it got a 5-star rating. But that leads us nicely to the Jura Journey Whiskey. Jura Journey is the starting point of the new rage, a NAS scotch produced, as all the range, with a combination of peated and unpeated spirit that will give a slightly peated style. For Jura Journey, the whisky has been aged in American white oak ex-bourbon barrels. It has been bottled at 40% abv, without chill-filtration and no added color. The nose and the taste lineup. The taste starts with the soft peat smoke, and then the wave of vanilla washes over you. A great collection of unique whiskies that are smooth, bright and lively, just like the tiny island community who make them.

In the glass, Jura Journey is pale yellow. On the nose, it is light and herbaceous. Some soft notes of white grape and pear with a slight citrus touch. There is a sweet side full of vanilla and shortbread, with small flashes of peat smoke. Whiskey doesn’t need to be a complex layering of fruits, herbs, spices, and casks to be good. Jura Journey is a simple and satisfying whiskey. The quality of the bourbon casks is obvious because the vanilla and the fruit are evident. These flavors are carefully balanced out with the peat. I suppose everyone’s palette is different but I found this incredibly salty, harsh and bitter…just like one of my exes. And though I feel bad about it, Jura Journey is not that whisky. While looking for new consumers, it seems that Jura has forgotten that what makes a whisky special is the richness of its nuances. I bought some Islay once, a whole bottle of it. took me 3 years to get through it, if it had been purple I might have had a clue… Soon after, hints of smokey pear and crisp green apples arrive. As you glide towards the finish, you’ll get some bitterness and oaky spice. It is a soft and sweet start that feels like toffee sauce, cloves, and nutmeg. For those who are letting each note wash over them, they’ll get subtle cocoa hits too. Jura is not very peated and is more like a regular highland malt than its island neighbours. So I suggest Highland Park, Dalwhinnie and possibly Oban which are not too dissimilar in style. I don’t really like Jura much actually, and don’t think it a patch on those three, at least for the style.

It began being sold as single malt in 1974, and the range has grown steadily since. The start of peating saw some smoky whisky being included in the no-age Superstition brand, launched in 2002, while a 100% smoked Prophecy was released in 2009. Palate: Somewhat thin, soft peat smoke, vanilla and soft fruitiness led by pears and a bit of green apples, oak spices and bitterness towards the end. B and B-: Good and above average. The best of the mass market whiskeys fit in this category, as do the bulk of the premium brands. A B- is three stars.

Jura Journey is a simple and plain whisky, which is hard to go deeper. For the same price, you should find a handful of scotch (and non-scotch) whisky brands that will surely give you way more.

Although the large southern Hebridean island of Jura has always been sparsely populated, it has a fascinating distilling heritage. The palate changes the calculus a little, as the rolling granary notes and a moderate punch of alcohol evoke a high-class blended Scotch. A bit of lemon peel, some cut hay, and a modest nougat character add some needed nuance, but all is in service of the significant bill of granary notes. The finish sees some caramel apple- and banana-driven fruitiness, but it never strays far from the course. The fade-out sees a touch of smoke as a reprise.On the palate, it is quite similar to the nose. Jura Journey is soft and creamy, though quite young and simple. The spirit herbaceous notes predominate, followed by sweet fruity notes. It is really fresh, with an almost imperceptible smoky touch. The finish is really short and a bit dry. Journey is a new no-age-statement release from the island-based Jura Distillery. It’s aged entirely in ex-bourbon barrels, but otherwise details are scarce. Finish: Medium length, gentle peat smoke, lingering oak spices bitterness, dryness, honey and bit of vanilla.

Why? Well, because after those initial heavy hitters, you’re treated to damp wood, buttery apples, toffee, nectarines, and smokey pears. Color It’s not only that the expressions changed, the whisky itself is now using a combination of peated an unpeated spirit across the entire lineup. No more exclusively unpeated or peated Jura in the core line up. It’s quite a bold move, ain’t it so? The following indicators should be taken as only a guide and not a set of hard and fast rules. Some "premium" whiskeys really are quite terrible, while some mass market products are good enough to pour into a decanter and serve to the Duke of Edinburgh. A+: A masterpiece and one of the ten best whiskeys of its type. Above five stars. All told, it’s a fine whisky to start off an evening, but there’s nothing overwhelmingly unique or compelling in focus here. Laphroaig and Lagavulin are nothing like Jura other than being all called whisky, nor is Talisker. All of these are peaty and medicinal in character. Jura doesn’t use peat kilned malt and so is much mellower.
