About this deal

I just wanted to get some thoughts on Ultimate Guard's Katana sleeves vs. Ultra Pro Eclipse Mattes. I've used the Eclipses and the shuffle feel is great, but they get really grimy easily, even after a thorough hand-washing and playing on playmats, and the corners are already starting to bend a little. The edges seem as though they could catch, scuff and mark the cards. Not only this, but there are 2 flavours of Cortex to sink your teeth into - Regular and Matte. Both Cortex versions are available in a standard card size (think Pokemon and Magic the Gathering) as well as a Japanese card game size (Yu-Gi-Oh). Just as with the stretch test, the Cortex Matte sleeves out shone the non-matte version. Even after 1000 rough shuffles these sleeves looked near untouched - slight bending on the corners and some minor scuffs but nothing beyond basic wear and tear. The Cortex sleeves are not the best sleeve on the market but they are certainly not the worst. Made with the average player in mind who doesn’t attend tournaments, but attends local game store events or plays with friends at home, the Cortex sleeves fit this audience perfectly. Still, the colors that are available are rich and vibrant. You’ll be happy to look at them as long as there is one you like.

Outer sleeves: I started with KMC and was happy until about 2 years ago there quality dropped off and I switched to the Ultra Pro Eclipse Sleeves and have loved the change over. The serious players among you will be glad to hear that both Cortex variants are opaque. When held to a bright light, only the silhouette of the cards can be seen, none of the card details or any other incriminating information. We score this a brilliant 8/10, missing only a couple of marks for sleeves that do not even show the silhouette of the card inside. When it comes to the way sleeves feel when shuffled, it can be a very subjective thing. We’ll do our best to describe the shuffle feel and give it a score based on our experience with all of the other sleeves we have tested. With this in mind, we believe there are 2 main types of outer sleeve when it comes to shuffle feel - buttery smooth and resistance free.

For sleeves with images , the images will begin to pull away from the sleeve, causing many sleeves to be unusable after that. We have carefully considered our ecological responsibilities. Our commitment to protecting the environment includes the use of new materials and the creation of new products with an additional focus on sustainability. The Return to Earth Series is our first step towards this goal. Difficult to double sleeve – double sleeving seems to be a challenge with top-down perfect fit sleeves. I would advise to either single sleeve with these or use sideloading perfect fit sleeves when double sleeving. they are extremely easy to insert into the katana sleeves. KCM is also nice, innersleeve but more for Dragonshild Sleeves. The Regular Cortex sleeves will be exactly what you are looking for if shiny foils and crisp colours are essential to you. Great appearance and as clear as any other glossy outer sleeve. 10/10.

I have and always will recommend Dragon shields. They last forever, and the inner sleeves protect all 4 sides of your cards. You talked about how you don't like the space above the cards but I think that's the trade off for pretty much the best protection on the market. The thinness of the sleeves means they don't take as much abuse as a Dragon Shield. I'm noticing lots of little dings and dents on my sleeves that I never experienced with Dragon Shields, mostly on the edges.

A diverse community of players devoted to Magic: the Gathering, a trading card game ("TCG") produced by Wizards of the Coast and originally designed by Richard Garfield. I know Dragon Shield sleeves have a large fanbase in the community and I also realize some or maybe even most of the listed solutions are on the higher end of the sleeve price spectrum. Opaqueness isn’t a new issue however and if you ever went to a tournament before, this is something you probably had to handle somehow. Besides, your cards love you (even when they give you agendas instead of ICE) and don’t they deserve some quality, opaque love in return? Null Signal Games is not associated with, produced by, or endorsed by Fantasy Flight Games, R. Talsorian Games, or Wizards of the Coast. When I first started (many years ago now), I used a lot of Ultra Pro products, but I personally feel that the quality just isn't there any more. With this new Cortex range, Ultimate Guard have managed to improve upon their Supreme sleeves without breaking the bank, and they should certainly be a consideration on your outer sleeve shortlist.

Nestling in between Ultimate Guard’s cheapest Supreme sleeves and Ultimate Guard’s premium Katana sleeves, the Cortex offering is an attempted synthesis between quality and value. If you’re new to the game you might wonder why sleeves matter at all, why can’t you just use any brand and type? Quoting the NISEI Organized Play Policies (this had been the same during FFG days, by the way): Worry not my fellow runners of the nets, there are indeed sleeves that are fully opaque and I will present some of those to you. I've basically always used Perfect Fits for my inner sleeves, and have never had an issue. Outer sleeves in general have more variety in my opinion. I appreciate the durability of Dragon Shield, but I know many who swear by the feel of Katanas. If you’re looking for reliable card protection with plenty of colorful options, consider investing in Ultimate Guard’s Katana Sleeves. They provide great value by offering lasting durability, an incredible shuffle feel, and vibrant and opaque colors at an affordable price. However, you are getting what you pay for. Katanas are well worth the price given their quality and durability. If you have a few extra dollars to spend, these sleeves are the way to go. Ultimate Guard Katana Sleeves are a newer sleeve from the popular accessory maker and bring premium quality at a premium price. They are made from 100% polypropylene material that is both acid-free and PVC-free. Protect your cards like a Samurai with Ultimate Guard's Katana sleeves! Honoring the tradition of great Japanese craftmanship, these precision-made, top-of-the-line sleeves are fully opaque, extremely durable and will meet the highest standards of players and collectors alike! I use KMC perfect fits for my internal sleeves and am quite happy with them now for I think like 4+ years. I do have some new Dragon Shield that I use for limited as they are the best sleeves you can get single sleeved and they do fit the double sleeved as well but they do have extra space if I remember right.
