Aiming to appeal to both photographers and videographers, it includes updates to Panasonic's DFD autofocus system, new creative photo modes, and video features that come close to matching both the GH5 and the much more expensive S1H. Key specifications: Here’s an extreme example showing how the camera handles multiple people on the frame, where the Human detection option is successfully surrounding lots of subjects with frames. You can tap the one you’d like it to prioritise. The S5 shares many video features with the S1H, adds some creative photo modes for stills shooters and gets an updated DFD autofocus system. It also handles noise brilliantly, delivering usable images comfortably up to 6,400 and perhaps a little beyond in certain circumstances. This is extremely good in situations where light is limited and you want to keep your shutter speed high, such as wildlife at dusk and dawn, as well as live performances. This is Panasonic's most compact full-frame camera to date. See what's different about it, and why it will get even better through firmware. Above: On the grip-side of the camera you’ll find twin SD memory card slots, although only the top slot-1 supports UHS II speeds. This leads to some labelling confusion with Slot 1 labelled with II for speed, while Slot 2 is labelled with I for speed. But it seems churlish to complain when the S5’s modest burst speed doesn’t overly tax the cards and importantly it can happily record video in any format to both cards simultaneously, all the way up to 4k 60p – a capability that’s not available on the more expensive Canon EOS R5 and R6, unless you count the proxy option on the R5 when recording 8k RAW. Plus I prefer having two SD slots versus the SD and XQD arrangement of the S1 and S1R. So thanks Panasonic for giving us the functionality that counts. To my surprise, Panasonic managed to retain in-body I.S. in the Lumix S5. It’s rated at up to 5-stops of stabilization and, depending on the Micro Four Thirds lens used, will implement Dual I.S. for up to 6.5 stops of stabilization with compatible stabilized lenses. To compare the technical resolution of the EOS R6 II, Lumix S5 II and Sony A7 IV, I photographed my standard resolution chart using the same adapted Sigma 40mm f1.4 Art lens on each body. This is one of the sharpest lenses I have, and as an EF model, it’s possible to adapt it to multiple systems to place them on a level playing field optically.

The camera's large buffer makes it easy to take a bunch of photos in a row. With the 9fps mechanical shutter, the S5 II manages 360 Raw or 380 JPG shots in a row, and it can get around 200 shots at a time with the 30fps electronic shutter. There is a caveat, however,—it takes between 50 and 60 seconds to write a full burst to memory, even with a fast 299MBps Sony Tough SDXC memory card. Sigma 60-600mm Sports, 532mm, f/6.3, 1/100-second, ISO 100 The standout features of the S5 are related to the fact that it’s super compact and comes in at a highly competitive price. It offers Lumix colours and full-frame quality in a much smaller body. It also adds JPEG + RAW capture to its sensor shift-based 96MP high resolution mode, which is a fantastic upgrade. Hoxton: the EVF in general still has a way to go to become attractive to me. I held and fondled the Leica SL once in my local shop, and that EVF was a lot better than its competitors at the time, but still... Maybe I should have got one instead of my current D850, haha. On the grip side of the camera you’ll find two SD card slots, both now supporting UHS-II speeds in an upgrade over the S5 and A7 III which only allow UHS-II speeds on Slot-1. Both the A7 IV and EOS R6 II also offer twin UHS-II slots, although Sony’s first slot alternatively allows you to insert a faster, albeit more expensive CF Express Type A card, giving it an advantage in buffer-flushing times. Above: From the image quality menus you can select three photo resolutions for JPEG files, at 24, 12 or 6 Megapixels. You can choose between two levels of JPEG compression and accompany them with RAW files if desired, although no compressed RAW options are available. There’s six different aspect ratios including two wider than normal, plus a bunch of framing guides too from tall and narrow to extra wide. HLG is available for high dynamic range photos for display on compatible devices and you can record them in 4k or at the full resolution.Moving onto composition, the S5 II employs a 3.68 million dot OLED with 0.78x magnification, a little larger and more detailed than the 2.36 million dot 0.74x panel on the previous model. The Panasonic Lumix S5 Mark II is a full-frame mirrorless camera with 24 Megapixels, 6k video, built-in stabilisation, 30fps bursts, and unlimited recording.

Set to the only RAW mode available, I managed 182 images at 7.8fps with continuous AF before the buffer filled. In any of these tests, the camera took between 30 and 45 seconds to write all of the images to the SD card. That’s quite a while to flush the full buffer, but you can grab more images as it’s clearing. Dynamic range is measured in EV (exposure values, or 'stops'). It's a measure of the camera's ability to record detail in extremely bright and dark areas of the scene. The higher the value, the better. And the ibis is regarded as some of the best. Doesn’t have the numbers of the Canon but certainly comparable in practice. Full sensor recording or “Open Gate” as camera manufacturers seem intent on calling it, is perfect for when you have to shoot content for multiple formats and aspect ratios. With such a large frame, you can comfortably crop a square, 4:5, or 9x16 frame for social media from videos shot this way. It can also now record up to 4 channels of 96kHz/24-bit audio when attaching a 3.5mm microphone or optional DMW-XLR1 adapter. Panasonic Lumix S5 II Build and Handling Full area touch is available) (Scalable AF frame size and flexible AF position) *Human/Animal Detection AF can be set ON or OFF.**** IBIS also of course also allows you to handhold slower shutter speeds than normal, and here’s a shot I took with the 85mm with a shutter speed of 0.4 seconds, the slowest I could successfully handhold a sharp image on the day. Announced in January 2023, the S5 II is pitched as an all-round hybrid camera, and brings a number of upgrades to the original model launched just over two years previously – but by far the most important is the inclusion of phase-detect autofocus.
