About this deal

It’s when light levels drop that the wide aperture really comes into its own though, delivering some pretty damn impressive low-light shots considering the Edge 40’s mid-range price tag.

Motorola Edge 40 review: Clean Android and long-lasting

Motorola equips the Edge 40 with the MediaTek Dimensity 8020.The eight-core SoC works with 8 cores, which are divided into four ARM Cortex A78 performance cores (2.6 GHz) and four ARM Cortex A55 energy-saving cores (2 GHz). The ARM Mali-G77 MP9 serves as the integrated graphics unit. There’s also ReadyFor, Motorola’s relatively unsung hero. It not only allows you to use your smartphone in a desktop mode resembling Windows 10 when plugged into an external monitor, but it boasts impressive support for Windows. You can run Android apps on your PC or laptop, along with interact with incoming notifications and even use the phone’s cameras as a webcam. This stylish handset from Motorola comes with a 6.55 inches (16.64 cm) display that has a resolution of 2400 x 1080 Pixels offering immersive and comfortable viewing..The Edge 40's 144 Hz display ensures that content is displayed smoothly. The responsivity is also good, as the touchscreen is scanned 360 times per second and reacts very precisely to inputs. The display glass is curved on the long sides, which makes the edges particularly narrow. One could be forgiven for assuming that this might result in increased input errors, but we did not encounter any during the course of our tests. The Edge 40 Pro display is great, it's nice and vibrant, with the option to turn down the saturation if you want something a little more neutral; It's a great-looking display, boosted by the 1300 nit brightness to help it cut through reflections on sunny days. This also puts some oomph into HDR content, with HDR10+ and Dolby Vision both supported - if you can find content that supports it. It’s just frustrating that the phone’s auto-refresh rate setting doesn’t ever crank it up to the full 144Hz, instead capping out at 120Hz. If you want the smoothest refresh rate possible, it does come at the cost of overall battery life.

Video performance is rather solid with OIS smoothing out jittery hand movements – at least when using the main rear sensor – with fun video modes like Portrait Video and a unique stabilisation mode that’ll work when rotated a full 360 degrees further improving the experience. It caps out at 4K@30fps both on the front and rear, with the former being fairly unique in the mid-range market. Performance The 50 MP main camera uses the OmniVision OV50A as the image sensor and takes 12 MP shots via 4-in-1 pixel binning. Thanks to its large aperture of f/2.4 and the optical image stabilizer, it takes surprisingly good and low-noise shots in low residual light. Daytime photos are also convincing with natural colors and a lot of detail, even in dark areas of the image. In comparison, all tested devices range from 0.1 (minimum) to 240 (maximum) ms. » 1% of all devices are better. Fingerprint on Display Reader, Proximity Sensor, Accelerometer, Ambient Light Sensor, SAR Sensor, Sensor Hub, E-CompassThe Motorola Edge 40 stands out in the mid-range market not only due to its thin, lightweight design and unique vegan leather rear that completely covers the camera housing, but the experience it delivers.
