The most recent book in Nagata Kabi's autobiographical series is, for me, the least impactful so far. It's not that it isn't still revelatory for her as she tries to navigate the idea of relationships and dating, but it's far more pedestrian than previous books. I think part of the reason this book felt less substantial is that previous books were startling in both their honesty and the scope of the issues she explored. I think more people have an understanding how the difficulties of dating and navigating meeting people goes, so there is less surprising material here. The author brings up confusion about her sexuality, her gender, and why she thinks she hasn't been able to love so far. Fascinatingly, she didn't know that all-encompassing romantic love was real until adulthood. The authoress is still dealing with recovering post her alcohol episode and finding a new fascination in her life.

The social anxiety and instabilities are still strong within this autobiographical comic essay (the fourth such series from this author). It can be hard to tell how much of this is an accurate reflection of what happened and how much of it is narrative flourishes to make it more entertaining for readers (like, I'm pretty sure some of these emoting panels are exaggerations at the very least). A seaside love story! The first volume was all about Shun and Mio figuring out themselves and their feelings, and now they’re traveling to Hokkaido as a couple to visit Shun’s estranged family. Painful and sweet in equal turns, this is a must-read for older fans of queer love stories.

The way Nagata is left deconstructing the entire concept of love felt so incredibly relatable in a way I've only started seeing. Then of course we have the continued exploration of Kabi's gender and sexuality journey. My two boys love to invent creative “detective missions” to solve around the house, and I feel like this is the perfect little book to put in their hands for them to enjoy and spark their imagination.

There isn’t much to My Wandering Warrior Existence. She goes to a friend’s wedding and decides she wants to wear a wedding dress and pose for photos so she does. Then she tries a dating app. That’s about it for stuff that happens. I personally understand her jealousy and confusion over the love that other people share. As with my own musings on love, she goes in a circle. Being fine one second, and the next being unsure or sad. I almost thought she was going to realize she was aromantic, as she was perplexed about how one goes from the closeness of friendship to having romantic feelings. This has never been confusing to me, having experienced it a few times, but is in line with what I've heard from aromantic people. I thought what her fan wrote her about one-sided feelings was interesting. Something I want to think about more, since I'm not sure whether I agree fully.
