About this deal

Suggest posting a photo of your existing plugs as they came out ... a look at the threads can offer some information about whether you’ve got an appropriate plug. -KB however Denso have given excellent results over the years, not just in std A series engines but in everything from tuned Minors to turbo charged modern performance engines, their platinum plugs are superb, yes they are expensive but will last around 60,000 miles with no noticeable loss of performance. Their iridium plugs are great for turbo cars where there will be very high compression under boost as they generally give a very strong spark. BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated: small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan. Aficionados know better. Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run. But I won't complain after 9 years of being off the road and "under construction", she finally is drivable

Our cars are 42+ years old, and were designed to run on leaded gas. This was very different chemistry from the stuff we get at the pump today. So, the plan is to work on a few small things on Saturday and I wanted to throw new spark plugs in while I was there and take it for a spin. I know BP5ES and BP6ES are the general recommendations for 2002 2.0 liter engines and I always use NGK, but I'm not sure which heat range I should go with. Here's what I know about the engine: I went to a BP5ES plug (slightly hotter than the BP6) and switched to 87 octane gas as another step toward reaching my goals. The proper correlation between NGK and Champion is the question, and at the end of the day the colour ought to govern the choice. F000KE0P16, F000KE0P34, W175TR30, W200TR30, W6DC, W7DC, W7DCR, WR5D+, WR6D, WR6D+, WR6DC, WR6DC+, WR6DP, WR7D, WR7D+, WR7DC, WR7DC+, WR7DC2, WR7DP, WR8DC4, STK7500, STK7501, STK7594, STK7595Other than substantially modified engines, the normal NGK plug recommended is the BP6ES. I note that in the current Moss catalogue , whilst that grade is quoted for 'standard heat range', BP5ES is quoted for use with unleaded fuel and BP7ES for use with increased comp. ratio. I use the BP6ES in my 6 which has a lead-free conversion and a compression ratio of 9.65:1, but occasionally suffers fouled plugs from cold start, which is an inconvenience to say the least. The car in running triple Webers and is fed Shell V Max. Would a switch to the BP 5 plugs improve matters? The carbs have been set up on a rolling road, but, by the time fine jet adjustments were being made, the engine was at full working temperature so cold-start issues were not apparent. I think I can safely say that it may have plugs in it from 1999, which is probably good because they are what the long-term owner always ran in it (1970-2000), and the car has only had 4,000 miles put on it since 2004. I recall that one-time prolific poster on this forum, 'bmcecosse', told a tale of a mate's car that wouldn't go.........they tried a few things and in the end Roy substituted the NKG plugs for Champion and the car fired up first time. He then threw the NKG plugs into a neighbouring field!

But coming full circle, you raise an excellent point and I will put in whatever plugs are currently in there and see how she behaves. I had to get rid of the slop in the distributor, replace the throttle shaft bearings (vacuum leak), power valve, accelerator pump diaphragm , and plastic float (replaced with brass) on my Weber 32/36. Champion N9YC, Denso W20EP, W20EP-U, Bosch W6D, WR6DP, W7D, W7DC, W7DC, Rocwood F6TC, Oregon 77-215-1, 77-315-1, 77-316-1, O-L15YC, LR15Y, Torch F6TC. From what I've seen on this forum the P.I. cars do better with hotter plugs. The above issue about #s 5&6 is a recurring theme too. Some have fattened the plenum to 4" in an effort to correct this. This spark plug has corrugated ribs, triple gasket seal, copper core for more effective heat removal, a 21 mm (13/16 inches) hex size, and 0.9 mm (0.035 inches) gap.

Once this was done, then I spent time fiddling with the timing and vacuum advance and the electric choke setting. In my day job I design special purpose blast machines, one of our customers in the 90's was Champion. Varmista saatavuus tekemällä noutotilaus tavarataloon. Noudettavissa 4 h kuluessa. On 6ES, V-Power or Ultimate + Valvemaster, I get occasional cold-start fouling on my PI. On 7ES it was even worse. My biggest failure with a NGK plug was when the earth terminal fell off and was jammed into the top of the piston on my previous modern. That meant me taking the head off which had to have a light skim. Not a job I want to do again as half the car and half the engine had to be stripped to gain access.
