About this deal

The lens features a distance scale complete with a DOF scale, although the latter is of extremely limited use, having markings for f/16 only. Optical Construction: 14 elements in 10 groups, 3 aspherical, 4 LD (low dispersion), BBAR-G2 coating (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection Generation 2), fluorine coating It is true that wide-angle lenses distort subjects at close distances and I would certainly avoid using such lenses for close-up portraiture. However, that’s not how one should use these lenses in the first place! Wide-angle lenses are very useful in wedding photography. For example, if you want to showcase the bride in her surroundings, you can do that with a wide-angle lens: NIKON D750 + 20mm f/1.8 @ ISO 720, 1/40, f/5.6 While some photographers really praise the older 105mm f/2 DC as a portrait lens, after trying both out, I can tell you that there is simply no comparison – the newer f/1.4E is far better in comparison, even when both are compared at their wide open apertures. NIKON D750 + 105mm f/1.4 @ 105mm, ISO 200, 1/2500, f/1.4 That is, DSLR systems all use an autofocus method that can be prone to unreliable results if the micro-adjustment is off, for either the body or the lens.

Closer focusing – the Nikon 35mm f/1.8G allows close focusing to just one foot, while the Nikon 50mm f/1.4G is at 1.5 feet.A Guide to Stunning Butterfly Photography (17 Expert Tips) Silhouette Photography: The Ultimate Guide (+ 22 Tips) Landscape Photography Composition: 17 Expert Tips 22 Cat Photography Tips and Ideas for Beautiful Images It is worth noting that in a couple of cases, specifically when shooting at close distances less than 10-15 meters, distortion did not seem to be symmetrical across the frame. While the effect was only barely noticeable, if you are into architectural photography, I recommend investigating this potential issue further more before you decide to keep the lens for professional work. This is not an issue for all other types of photography. Chromatic Aberration I won’t bother showing samples from smaller apertures, because both lenses perform very similarly. Plus, there are very few situations where you would use very small apertures on portrait lenses…

When compared against the Zeiss Distagon 35mm ZF.2, Nikon handles ghosting and flares better, in my opinion. Take a look at a similar image shot with the Zeiss: NIKON D3S + Zeiss Distagon T* 2/35 ZF.2 @ 35mm, ISO 200, 1/15, f/13.0 Unlike some of the other f/1.4 (and now even f/1.2) lenses out there which strive for optical perfection, (but still don’t achieve it, though they come close) …this Tamron is among those few lenses which seem to achieve the impossible: it’s not just optically better in most ways than its near-perfect competition, it also does it for less money and/or in a smaller form factor. Sharpness Photographers often prefer a longer lens than a 35mm for making regular portraits. I do use my 105mm much of the time for photographing people in posed positions. However, I like to create a variety of styles during a portrait session and I find my 35mm lens provides pleasing alternatives.I have to be honest, I really don’t like to call something “perfect” in a gear review. But lately, it seems that I’ve been reviewing quite a few near-perfect lenses. Are any of them truly flawless, though? No, they could always be a little better. But, there is an optimal balance between “truly flawless” and “near-perfection”.
