About this deal

We’re delighted to be working with the Government and our partners Libraries Connected, Association of Independent Museums, and Creative Lives to strengthen the amazing work already being done by Libraries, Museums, and Voluntary Arts Groups in bringing creativity and culture to communities throughout England. During the pandemic, we saw how participating in creativity and culture can help alleviate loneliness and isolation, and foster connections. This programme will offer even more exciting opportunities for people while they connect with others, meet new people, and make a positive impact in their community through volunteering. Most of them are my age so we meet every evening to cycle together and play on swings. We also go to each other’s birthday parties and sing and dance. The most favourite thing about my neighbourhood is definitely the residents.

Collective mural of children's homes: large piece of white paper, people cut out of catalogues, colourful cardboard and paper, etc. People From My Neighborhood is a micro-fiction or very short stories. It only took me five to seven minutes to finish one short story. All the short stories are linked. Despite the slow start, it developed good until the last story. Sixteen of the 26 stories were published in Japan in 2016 under the title Konoatari no hitotachi (Folk from round about). The English edition is published by Granta in 2020; the translator is Ted Goossen (more about him directly below).

A collection of 36 very short stories set in a small town in Japan. Eccentric, bizarre, enchanting, each tale is interconnected and weaves together to form a fantastical world.

People from My Neighborhood delivers a heartfelt, beautiful, dreamlike rendition of urban life that is both glorious on its own merits and will emotionally resonate with those of us who, due to the pandemic, have been required to stay at home, kept at arms lengths from our family, friends, and community.”—Ian Mond, Locus Similarly, we also organize events from time to time so that the whole neighbourhood gathers and enjoy themselves. I have a lot of friends in my neighbourhood with whom I play. The subtle strangeness of this neighbourhood is hugely reminiscent of Royston Vasey in The League of Gentlemen: a place full of usual people who behave unusually or are subject to unusual circumstances, be they quietly supernatural, antisocial, or plainly bizarre. From the author of the internationally bestselling Strange Weather in Tokyo, a collection of interlinking stories that masterfully blend the mundane and the mythical—”fairy tales in the best Brothers Grimm tradition: naïf, magical, and frequently veering into the macabre” ( Financial Times). Organize a bicycle outing with parents. Before your departure, invite a policeman to visit your group and review bicycle safety rules with the children or print the following document. Sure, not every story works, but that tends to be because elements of the story don't speak to me, and that feels so deeply personal, I can't really hold that against the book.

Organize a neighbourhood photo contest. Ask parents to take pictures of the places and things found in your neighbourhood with their children. Display the pictures on your daycare walls throughout the theme and have parents vote for their favourite picture. Tempting as it is, People from My Neighborhood is not a book to rush...The interlinking short stories in this collection are fairy tales in the best Brothers Grimm tradition: naïf, magical and frequently veering into the macabre...in a world where much is insubstantial...Kawakami's clean narrative style is very much her own.

But, when it does it tends to be when it’s in short story format, and having heard such good things about Kawakami’s other work, I decided to give this collection of micro fiction a shot.
