Both original and informative . . . the wealth of detail never slows what is a tightly woven plot’ Historical Novel Society The winners of The Farshore Reading for Pleasure Teacher Awards 2023, highlighting the work schools are doing to encourage a love of reading, have... Sawbones won the 2014 Young Quills Award for best historical fiction for over 12s. It has been shortlisted for the Rotherham Book Award, the Salford Children’s Book Prize and the Hoo Kids Book Award. It was really informative to learn about the trials Matthew had to go through to even get to the North Pole, but also afterwards where his accomplishment was constantly overshadowed by his white peers. It took years before he was seen as equal, and even years after his death for people to give him the hero's burial he deserved. I loved writing this, it’s a real adventure story, with sword fights and derring do. It also features a walk on part from one of my favourite people from history, Colonel Thomas Alexandre Dumas – inspiration for all of the Three Musketeers as well as The Count of Monte Cristo.

Everyone should read a chapter (or more, if they fancy) of their chosen story. Anyone who’s not reading aloud should mute themselves so it’s easy for everyone to hear. Johnson’s heroine has a brave and endearing voice….I loved the visual detail.’– Adele Geras Times Educational Supplement A week of whole class reading planning for Years 3 and 4 around the theme of explorers! The planning uses extracts from 3 fantastic books; No one should feel pressured to read in front of everyone else – ask people to volunteer or get a leader to do the reading. I would definitely recommend this book to other people because it has a nice storyline that tells a true story from someone who started as a nobody and ending up being honoured for everything they have done and managing to reach the North Pole, all because they were determined. In addition, it teaches you about the past and what the high North is like (the way of living there and conditions). But it is mainly about fighting for what you want to and achieve. However, I was not that attracted to Matthew’s stepmother: Nellie because of how she treated Matt compared to his sisters and I did not like how she beat him nearly to death for doing barely anything wrong. Every once in a while I stumble across a teenage novel that restores my faith in the genre…..a superb book.’ Decide how you’ll show everyone the list of questions for Roll and recap and get the list ready – we’ve suggested some example questions, but you could add your own.

Whilst the story depicts scenes of death and hardship, it is not overall an emotionally difficult book to read (probably due to language and pace), and I believe would be suitable for anyone in Y4+. However, racism is a theme throughout and should, as always, be discussed in a sensitive manner with children. This book was very inspiring especially knowing Matthew started from nothing and had to first make some money and in the circumstances, he was in made me think about how difficult it would have been. Knowing this is a true story is truly remarkable and made me even more inspired. Matthew Henson was simply an ordinary man. That was, until Commander Robert E. Peary entered his life, and offered him a chance at true adventure. Henson would become navigator, craftsman, translator, and right-hand man on a treacherous journey to the North Pole. Defying the odds and the many prejudices that faced him to become a true pioneer. This is his incredible and often untold story. Particularly suitable for struggling, reluctant or dyslexic readers aged 8+It’s up to you whether you type them into the chat, share your screen, or hold a list up to your camera. Catherine Johnson is a screen-writer and best-selling author of several books for children and young adults. Her acclaimed novel Sawbones won the Young Quills Award for Historical Fiction, and her most recent book The Curious Tale of the Lady Caraboo, was nominated for the CILIP Carnegie Medal and the YA Book Prize. Catherine has been a Writer in Residence at Holloway Prison, a Royal Literary Fund Writing Fellow at the London institute and has mentored writers in Africa for the British Council. Chapters 1 – 3 were the ones I found most boring as there was no action in the story, although Chapters 5 – 7 was far more interesting and I enjoyed it a lot more than the previous chapters as I had more for imagination when it came to imagine the image in my head. The last few chapters include the expedition to the North Pole, which I really liked. Henson would become navigator, craftsman, translator, and right-hand man on a treacherous journey to the North Pole. Defying the odds and the many prejudices that faced him to become a true pioneer.

In this period of history, they didn’t know that much but they were trying to find out new things about the world, like going to the North Pole for the first time and investigating it. But old age is slowing Mother Hopkins down, and she wants to carry out one last con, a con to outdo all the cons that have gone before. And so the gang set about bringing ruin upon Captain Walker, a proud and cruel slave captain, who deserves to be taught a lesson or two . . . Matthew began as an orphan after both his parents had died, he had never known his mum and had liked to imagine that she was as adventurous as he was. After his step-mum had beaten him for tiny and not important things, Matt ran away to Washington DC. He travelled the world at the young age of 11 and returned to land when he was 14. Not able to find a job, Matt resigned to the streets after vowing to never return to his home again.Use this interesting Matthew Henson Reading Comprehension Activity to help your child to develop their comprehension skills at home. The KS1 resource is split into three different levels to suit most children aged 5-7. Encourage your child to carefully read the fact file before answering a variety of questions. It is a great way to help you to know if your child is understanding what they are reading, while learning about an this important historical figure. Last days of school… that final exam… the awkward visit to say goodbye to some of the teachers. Where will it all lead? Iestyn can’t be sure. Plotting a definite course is not the thing. For him, there’s more life in charging around the forestry in his mate’s car. Until the crash, that is. Until his mate takes up with Martine. Until Iestyn himself has his new job to worry about – and until, more unexpectedly, someone moves in on his feelings with such force that his world is turned upside down. Monday is focused on your class novel and has a starter activity based on the front covers of the books we will be looking at this week which involves 4 questions using the Retrieve, Infer and Predict skills. Friday’s lesson should be an at-distance comprehension which you will need to resource yourself. I found the plot very factual, chronological, and to-the-point instead of light-hearted and exciting but interesting all the same, especially as it was told from the point of view of Matthew himself, not in the third person like most books of this style are. I liked the fact that the first person perspective meant you understood the friendships Matthew developed with the people he met in his life like the Eskimos he went to the pole with.
