About this deal

The plot is frightening with many heartbreaking occurrences. The stakes have never been higher for Roy Grace and his committed team of detectives. The race to a result is breathtaking... There is no tension. Nothing is nail biting. Too much is included that does not move the murder story and does no more than explain the plight of puppies farmed without care who do not appear to get their happy ending.

In the dead of night, a farmer hears a suspicious noise. It’s everyone’s worst nightmare: a break-in. When he confronts the intruders, he has no idea that just minutes later he will be left lying in a pool of blood. But the chilling truth lies not in the act itself, but what the perpetrators were willing to kill for. In the story arc, Sandy Grace, Roy's first wife, vanishes before the story begins but now we can find out what happened to her in the next book They Thought I Was Dead - Sandy's Story (out on May 23, 2024).The investigation leads to a nail biting standoff between Grace, Potting and a brutish puppy farmer. The story is told in the typical Grace style, racing through the revelations and trying to stop anything else happening before its too late. The usual crew of Branson, E-J and Potting are there, along with some new faces who hopefully will feature in future stories.

I could not put this book down. The subject matter of puppy farming and dog theft is very upsetting but was treated as sensitively as possible and really brings home the horror of this disgusting trade and how innocent people are caught up in it. My only reservations are it’s a bit over explained especially at the start and there is some repetition, however, once it gets going this issue fades away. I do have a little titter because as per usual the author gets gait analysis into the plot. - he sure loves that!We are treated to some great pieces of detective work by Grace and his team, and it was fun to have all the usual team together for this case – my favourite still must be Norman Potting who was there with his usual drole wit! I also loved the storyline of Bluebell, a young girl whose parents brought her a puppy. This was a sad turn to the case, but interesting watching it unfold. The style rarely moves away from sounding like a report except where it sounds like a newspaper article. Never happy when a real life person supposedly interacts with the fictional. Not likely to be responsible for the outcome of treatment because the patient lives in the imagination of the author. So filler.

These criminal masterminds are ruthless and don't stop at murder when a farmer confronts intruders about to steal five puppies and the parent dogs - and pays with his life...Crimes are solved through a combination of perseverance and perspiration rather than inspiration- just as is the case in real life. At the scene of a crime, Detective Superintendent Roy Grace soon realises this is no isolated robbery gone wrong but the tip of the iceberg of a nationwide crime wave, in which ruthless organised gangs are making more money from the illegal trade in dogs than drugs. A trade which pits him against some ruthless people who will kill anyone who gets in their way, because where there is greed, there is murder. Thus we have the basis for the latest Peter James Roy Grace crime thriller. Tim Ruddle and his wife fed up living in London buy a farm in Sussex. This time, Grace is confronted with one of the most horrible crimes: making money of innocent animals. Of course, it starts with all those people who suddenly want a pedigree dog but are not willing to pay for it.

Stop Them Dead review: Roy Grace at the centre of canine capers Stop Them Dead review: Roy Grace at the centre of canine capers

This book centres around the horrific increase during Covid of puppy theft, with often deadly results. Peter himself is a supporter of the RSPCA in the UK and wanted to highlight the ongoing issues with the exorbitant prices paid for puppies, not only purebreds, which attract those criminals wanting to profit at the cost of the animal.Careful investigation and planning lead to a nail-biting conclusion and I was on the edge of my seat, seriously worried about more than one of the police team. I know that Peter James does meticulous research for all of his novels but he has excelled himself this time. At the scene of the crime, Detective Superintendent Roy Grace soon realises this is no isolated robbery gone wrong but the tip of the iceberg of a nationwide crime wave, in which ruthless organised gangs are making more money from the illegal trade in dogs than drugs. A trade which pits him against some ruthless people who will kill anyone who gets in their way, because where there is greed, there is murder. Grace’s investigation into this deadly trade pits him against some of the most ruthless people he has ever encountered; people who will kill anyone who gets in their way, because where there is greed, there is murder. This is book 19 but can easily be read as a standalone. I love Peter James and his Roy Grace series, it is a must read for me personally. The plots are always current and the authors research make me feel like I’m actually reading real life not fiction. The dark crime and the sinister criminals are the main focus but the police teamwork/procedures and the glimpses into life outside the station make this a totally enjoyable and engrossing read. As always there’s a glossary at the end with all the police terminology. The book topic is illegal dog trade and I hope it helps raise awareness. A farmer is killed when confronting intruders who complete the successful robbery of some unusual items. Organised criminal gangs have identified a new market and are willing to do what it takes to make money. Roy Grace is determined to stop it.
