About this deal

Alfie, the protagonist, had failed many friendships in his 1000 years of living. But not the last one when he decided to end his mortality after his beloved mother died in their burning house. He finally found true friends. Great for fans of Charlie & Me, The Ethan I Could Have Been and Fishboy. And, if you haven't read Ross Welford's other books, they are well worth it too.

The 1,000-year-old Boy by Welford Ross | Goodreads

So why not 5 stars? Simply because at the close of this book the agenda becomes clear. It's final message, is the slightly cliche, wish-washy 'Life is better because it's short.' Aiden: Aiden was amazing as well! I did not enjoy him as much as Alfie, but he was a valuable character. Aiden had moved into a new neighborhood and was feeling left out of everything. He was left in the dust by his two best friends, his parents were fighting alot, and he overall didn't enjoy life. That is, until he meets Alfie and Roxy. When he meets those two, Welford really brings out his personality. Aiden is skeptical, sarcastic, but a valuable friend once you get to know him. Throughout the story, Aiden grows from a skeptical, mistrusting boy to a friendly guy willing to do anything for his friends. An incredible book for 10 years and above. From around 8 years children can develop a sudden fear of death. It’s probably due to the fact that, at this age, they begin to realize that life is tangible. I would highly recommend this book for teachers to read to a class and discuss it as they go through it. From the friendship perspective (9 year is the age of first friendship ‘break ups’), death, adventure, adjusting to changes in family circumstances etc this book has it all.. A heartstopping, poignant, epic adventure story about a boy destined to live forever, who only wants to grow up. The ending is so well done and so beautiful, that I felt overwhelmed. As I read the last lines of the book, I felt a tear glide down my cheek. It is after a long time I have felt this way about a story and I must thank the author for coming up with such a brilliant story. So impressed am I with his work that I have gone ahead and bought his previous two books as well. Can’t wait to begin them as well.

Alfie Monk looks like any other 11-year old boy, other than a slightly odd dress sense and teeth that are badly in need of a dentist. However, as the title suggests, he is actually 1,000-years old: frozen in time through the magic of precious life pearls. The 1,000-year-old Boy is a beautiful, thrilling, moving and brilliant story that, while being targeted at a younger audience, can be read by everyone. It has interesting and complex characters and is fast-paced and easy to read. I can already see it being made into a popular children’s Hollywood movie someday very soon – it has all the elements for it. At one point, tragedy strikes Alfie’s life and he is left completely alone in the world. He is frustrated at his condition and wants to grow old. But for that he needs help. Some books leave you, with a warm fuzzy feeling and a smile on your face. This is one of those books. I was expecting something different, but this was still a good read. Once I started reading it was difficult to stop - all the characters were amazing and so likeable (especially biffa).

With both fantasy and history as its undertone, The 1,000-Year-Old Boythen foregrounds its bildungsroman-esque plot as the overarching genre. While we can agree that The 1,000-Year-Old Boyis very much a coming-of-age novel, the protagonist does not rebel against the idea of growing up as protagonists in coming-of-age novels are wont to do — instead, we are taken on a journey of self-acceptance and forgiveness as Alfie’s lust for life demands that he learns to become a child again if he is to grow up and grow old. This involves ridding himself of his mistrust of others and of the cynical worldview he has adopted over a thousand years. The winners of The Farshore Reading for Pleasure Teacher Awards 2023, highlighting the work schools are doing to encourage a love of reading, have...The astonishing, beautiful new story for all readers of 10 and over from the bestselling and Costa-shortlisted author of TIME TRAVELLING WITH A HAMSTER. 'A wonderful story' Kiran Millwood Hargrave I enjoyed it a lot but sometimes it would go a bit down hill after a few chapters but overall pretty good. This novel has everything you want from a children’s book – pace, plot, great characters who grow and learn from their experiences, and suspense. It has a happy ending. Although I believe that children should not be completely shielded from some of the tragic realities of life (Alfie’s mother is killed and for a time he believes his cat was also), I also think it’s important for the 9-12 age group that there is positive resolution and that good things can come out of bad. That way, I believe, we can help build children’s resilience, a role that books have always had in my life for sure. I really enjoyed this book. It’s not at the very top of my rating scale, but it’s a great read. Both for adults and tweens, if you like to read about what matters in life. Bringing the concept of living a long life into a tween book is not always easy, but The 1000 Year Old Boy makes it close to home. It’s a fun read too. I read this to my 8 year old son. He'd be perfectly capable of reading it himself, but I'm glad he let me read it to him - I really enjoyed this book.
