But they may not be. They may just be egging each other on to have this collective experience. Which you would, there’s a pressure to perform at these things. But I really liked making that entity as nasty as it was. If you’re going to have a ghost, you need a malevolent one! Whose roots are ill-defined… even if the ghost is coming from you, that’s also somehow terrifying. That was me and Joel Morris. In 2012, we were just so annoyed. As a TV writer, it’s hard to be taken seriously if you’re not also in front of the camera. As I say, they often don’t trust you with your own work. And I said to Joel, “Look – if money was no object, what would you do?” W ill Maclean’s hugely enjoyable debut is a love letter to 1970s British hauntology, stirring up the cultural memory with folkloric creepiness, paranormal oddities, hormonal teens, and a chilling prophecy that propels the novel toward a truly horrifying conclusion. Brimming with weird England references, from M.R. James to Aleister Crowley, The Apparition Phase will delight fans of the haunted house genre, and Maclean – a successful TV writer – makes sure the plot has more than enough ghostly goings-on to shake an electromagnetic field detector at. Predominately however, this remained a haunting tale. I was immediately granted dreadful premonitions and spine-tingling chills, which is exactly what I desire from the horror fiction I read. Later events only proved to become more focused on the supernatural, with an abundance of scenes directly focused on conversing with the dead, ensuring these feelings continued throughout. I did guess some of the twists that occurred but not the final one, which guaranteed I was gripped throughout and left desperately yearning for more after the sinister open-ended conclusion. I really liked Scarred For Life; I bought and enjoyed that first volume so much. I haven’t got hold of the second volume yet, but I loved that they left no stone unturned. It’s a proper piece of sociology. It’s just nice that someone mapped all that stuff out. Even with the stuff that’s over-familiar… it was such a good piece of work.

This is what Mark Fisher said about cultural deceleration. And there’s still a lot to be written about this: that aspect maybe hasn’t had its time yet. I’m quite interested in the fact that most musicians now use the same suite of software… it brings a uniformity. As a writer, the production process and the filming are things that you’re not normally allowed anywhere near. So I think, for both of us, it was a turning point really. It just made us better at what we do. And I think you need to do those things, because they always lead somewhere interesting. I just went: “You know what… I’m not going to send speculative scripts into BBC2 any more, because I’ve been doing that for seven years and it hasn’t got me anywhere. I’m going to do something different”. Looking Glass Sound is the newest twisty psychological horror novel from Catriona Ward, the internationally bestselling author of The Last House on Needless Street and Sundial. The teens start off carefree enough, happy to be involved but when communications with Tobias open up, things take a dark turn. Secrets are revealed, furniture moves, suspicions are high. In an effort to convince her it was all just make believe, they invite Janice to the house to show her the attic. Things don't go as planned when Janice starts throwing a fit and making claims that, at the time, seem impossible but, only too soon, come true. Janice seems to believe that they have invited an entity into their home. David Schwimmer is spotted walking somberly to his NYC apartment after paying tribute to Friends co-star Matthew Perry This was most definitely a young adult novel, despite the narrators adult prose. Tim sounded like an adult but repeatedly acted like a child throughout his life. I don't even know what to say about the ending. It barely made sense and felt unrelated to the rest of the story, which was, at times, a mess. A coming of age story with a (dim) supernatural twist. She’s not, she’s two years older than me! Tim and Abi’s relationship is much more intense and much… odder. But we had a mutual interest in those kind of things, and we did fake a photograph. And it was rubbish. Absolutely appalling. Loose Women star looks completely UNRECOGNISABLE in horrifying costume for Halloween special... but can you guess who it is?

There’s another way of doing it, though. A woman called Caron Lipman wrote a wonderful book called Co-habiting With Ghosts. It came out in 2016, and it was her talking to people who live in haunted houses. I went to see her give a talk, and she introduced it by saying that she wouldn’t be talking about whether she believed in ghosts, or whether or not they’re objectively real. She just talked about the experiences of people who live in these houses, and believe they’re being haunted. And it just seemed like a really sane approach, to treat this non-judgmentally. People clearly have odd experiences: let’s just talk to them, and see what those experiences are. MAFS UK's Bianca reveals she wanted to be matched with GEORGES rather than JJ because of his 'manly vibes' a planetary conjunction which, at a solar elongation of only 12°, is too dim and too close to the Sunto I was immediately invested in the story of these twin teens. Tim provides the reader with his insight into their relationship and also the events that occur after this bond is shattered. It was, therefore, a far more emotional read than anticipated and I thought Maclean harrowingly rendered the different human responses to grief.

ABOUT 'THE APPARITION PHASE': Tim and Abi have always been different from their peers. Precociously bright, they spend their evenings in their parents’ attic discussing the macabre and unexplained, zealously rereading books on folklore, hauntings and the supernatural. In particular, they are obsessed with photographs of ghostly apparitions and the mix of terror and delight they provoke in their otherwise boring and safe childhoods. When there’s a new literary ghost story coming out from a respected publisher, especially if it’s by a debut author, I usually add it to my wishlist. It doesn’t have to sound like it’s going to break new ground: I like ghost stories in general so much that I’m more forgiving of their flaws, more willing to accept cliches. Which is to say that I went into The Apparition Phase with totally average expectations, thinking I’d enjoy it, but not anticipating anything spectacular. And I was blown away. I’ve written comedy, and kid’s TV, and it’s very enjoyable. But I really wanted to have a shot at this. I’m in my forties, and it’s the first time creatively that I’ve just thought, “Right – what do I want to do?” And I hope that enthusiasm comes across. If you work in telly, everything is interfered with at every stage of its gestation – for good and for ill. Ghost stories are either about a real ghost, and that takes the story into a certain kind of territory, or they’re psychological – which is interesting as well, but with that, you’re definitively shutting down the possibility of the ghost being real. It seemed like those were the only two options, but I tried to think of others and to play around with them a little.
