About this deal

In some ways, I think it’s the dog’s disappearance affects Maxwell the most. He has such a good relationship with Monster (the dog). I really enjoyed this book because i thought it was very funny. This is because the main character Maxwell is going round while he has been erased telling everyone their dark secrets they have not told anyone else but they can't remember ever knowing him. However,it was also a sad book since later on in the book one of the characters(Reg) who has severe memory loss lets Maxwell stay with him and he reveals that he erased himself after his wife Emily died of an uncureable illness. My favourite character was Reg who used to be Maxwell's elderly neighbour because he is kind, owns lots of random objects and he understands how Maxwell feels.I would recommend this to someone who wants a funny and medium-level read. I think the historical angle would be so lovely! Scholastic have also created some free teaching resources to use in the class room for this book (and The Goldfish Boy) which can be accessed here: Ik was al weg van De goudvisjongen. The story is a good one. And it play on the thoughts that many people, young and old feel sometimes when they made mistakes.

The story also focuses on imbibing values such as empathy, courage and perseverance among children. It is also commendable how the author has handled the delicate concept of separation among parents. It was neither glorified nor shown in a bad light. is really naughty at school and he gets told off loads of times he sneaks into a concert and turns off the electricity so the concert can’t go on. He gets erased and he loses his mum and dad and his sister Bex I loved this book! While It’s a Wonderful Life is never mentioned in the book (not that I recall, anyway), this book has a lot of parallels… Except it’s the teen edition! And it’s set in the UK. (Bonus for me, since it’s one of my favourite movies!) I love how it slowly dawns on Maxwell how important he is to those around him. One very bad day, he made a series of mistakes and bad decisions. He was so upset that he wished he was never born.

After a bad day at school and realising no one likes him or wants to be round him Maxwell wishes himself not to exist and just like that he ends up in the same world only a version where he hadn't even been born and no one there knows him. It’s another story written from a boy’s perspective with an underlying sense of loneliness (which seems to feature strongly in all of my books), but I think this book has a lot more humour. Yes, they were. Especially the scene where he talks about his wife Emily. That was a ‘writer sobbing at her laptop’ moment! The Goldfish Boy was one of the biggest-selling debuts of 2017.
