The Jewel Garden | Charlatan | The Jewel Garden The Jewel Garden | Charlatan | The Jewel Garden

A journey through beautiful Islamic gardens across the world, with photographs by the acclaimed Derry Moore. This book is a reflection on how the Jewel Garden, and the garden in which it is set (known as Longmeadow on the TV although I don't believe that's its actual name), came into being, after the Dons' original jewelry business failed and left them broke and jobless. A chance bequest gave them enough money to put down a deposit on a house, and being (evidently) considerable risk-takers they went for an ancient, unrenovated farmhouse and two acres of field, near a river that turned out to be rather good at flooding. The book gives the reader a glimpse into this maelstrom, but it is just a glimpse as anyone that has been through similar will attest. Forgotten the title or the author of a book? Our BookSleuth is specially designed for you. Visit BookSleuth The Cottage garden spent the first 20 years of its existence as a dedicated vegetable garden, conveniently near the kitchen and supplying the family with all our fresh produce. But over the past ten years it has slowly evolved into a traditional, but essentially floral, cottage garden, filled with blowsy, soft colours but also containing fruit trees, rhubarb, gooseberries and some herbs all mingled in together.

He wrote this book with his wife, Sarah, and I must say I enjoyed her contributions as much as I did Monty’s . Here is a good example.

Monty Don Longmeadow — Monty Don

Overwhelmingly honest, passionate, inspiring, with prose to die for... a meditation on family and love ( Independent on Sunday) It is also the season of fruitfulness with the orchard providing over 50 different varieties of apples and the vegetable garden offering its final rich summer harvest.Jewel garden" is a phrase that seems to have entered into British lingo, and I find myself wondering if the Dons were following a trend toward bright, clashing flower colors in gardens or whether they actually helped create it. Monty Don is the lead presenter on the above-mentioned venerable TV show for gardeners, so I've seen the actual Jewel Garden any number of times--brilliant flowers, often on absolutely huge plants, set off by towering grasses, the whole thing entirely over the top and yet entirely satisfying even when the plants flop over into the paths as they frequently do by midsummer. So I’ve got some plants here, deliberately to plant along the edge of the paths so that they can spill over and just soften the whole effect.” I ate it up! If you haven't ever heard of Monty Don, I would recommend watching an episode of Gardener's World prior to reading this book. You'll enjoy it a lot more.
