Gilly is Edgar Award nominated and an ITW award finalist. Her books have been translated into over 20 languages. Tinniswood rambles around and many of the chapters feel full of name-dropped personages who are never described or contextualised or characterised: if you're not thrilled by aristocratic names (I'm not) you might well wonder who these people are. Three couples decide to go on an isolated retreat, deep in the Northumbria moors, the three women arrive early for a weekend getaway with their husbands due to join them the following morning. Well that was the plan, because when they get to Dark Fell Barn the women find a note claiming that one of their husbands has been murdered. With no phone or internet coverage in the moors they are stranded and unable to confirm or refute the claim.

There is nothing quite as beautiful as an English country house in summer. And there has never been a summer quite like that Indian summer between the two world wars, a period of gentle decline in which the sun set slowly on the British Empire and the shadows lengthened on the lawns of a thousand stately homes. While some have settled into marriage and the consequential issues of monogamy and long-term relationships, others are still looking for fulfillment. Add in a wild child now suffering the effects of depression and the whole group feels the ramifications. However, things turn sinister when they arrive and find a gift with a suspicious note claiming that one of their husbands will be murdered. I've not always been a big fan of Gilly MacMillan, but I really loved this book! If your a fan of taut, fast-paced thrillers give this one a read.Gilly Macmillan is the Edgar nominated and New York Times bestselling author of What She Knew, The Perfect Girl, Odd Child Out, I Know You Know, and The Nanny. She grew up in Swindon, Wiltshire and lived in Northern California in her late teens. She worked at The Burlington Magazine and the Hayward Gallery before starting a family. Since then she’s worked as a part-time lecturer in photography, and now writes full-time. She resides in Bristol, England. Tinniswood is the reigning authority on these old country houses. He has written 12 books on the subject and was awarded the OBE by the Queen for preserving the nation's architectural and social history This is thematic history with each of the 17 chapters based on a certain theme. There is a chapter entitled The King's House (George V, Prince of Wales, Duke of York).; The House Party (the long weekend from Saturday to Tuesday and

Weekend breaks are a great way to satisfy your wanderlust in just two to four days. Whether you want to get out and explore a new culture or have a long weekend in the sun, it feels spontaneous and exciting. You could book an outdoorsy escape to the Lake District, a balmy beach trip to Majorca, or an urban adventure in Dublin. Overall, I was more frustrated in figuring out what character was speaking at any time to get fully lost in the story.Their story covers a wide range of popular and social themes, including politics, business, science, religion, art, literature, fashion, education, popular amusements, domestic life, sexual relations, and much else. [1] A mystery told through multiple characters POV’s, full of twists and turns and once you get into the characters is a good read. I am such a fan of Fiona’s books as they are gentle and easy to read, yet at the same time fun with clever undertones for consideration. On this occasion, The Long Weekend provides a wonderful tale of friendship and love where Fiona cleverly explores how we must live and learn from our mistakes and, in fact, appreciate how they have made us stronger and into the person we are today. What do a physiotherapist, gym owner, influencer & SAHM have in common. On the surface not much, but somehow they have all ended up at an expensive writing retreat with a famed author.

Twenty years since meeting at university, a group of friends rent a house in Devon to celebrate. Fresh air, sandy beaches and historic friendships - what could possibly go wrong? At first, I thought it was kind of a silly, basic thriller setup. Three couples are supposed to go to a remote, isolated location for a weekend away. The husbands all have things come up so they send the three wives ahead with the promise to catch up with them the next day. When the women arrive, there is a note from another woman--Edie--who was part of the fourth couple in the group, but her husband has died. She tells them in the note that she has killed at least one of their husbands. Then a storm hits, so they can't leave and they have no phone service.I really enjoyed this book by Fiona Palmer. It is the first I have read by this author, but it won't be the last.

Here are some choice bits of abuse, inspired by a particularly loathsome member of the aristocracy, to hold somewhere in your mind for the time, inevitably, you will need them: “Harold Nicolson described her as “a fat slug filled with venom”; Cecil Beaton called her “a galumphing, greedy, snobbish old toad who watered her chops at the sight of royalty; and Leonie Leslie, Winston Churchill's aunt, said she would rather have an open sewer flowing through her drawing room than entertain [said loathsome aristo]” (l. 2343). Truely, it was the golden age of invective. This is a story about friendship in unlikely places, learning from your secrets and confronting your past. The note attached to the gift, claims that one of their husbands will be murdered that night, and with 📵 no cell service, the roads impassable due to the weather, and the dementia of their host John, causing additional confusion…the women must survive the night before they learn the fate of their spouses. It isn't about life in these beautiful old stately homes, it's about parties, who was invited where, who they were, what they did (eat, shoot, change clothes a lot) but mostly who they were and often what they thought of each other and the sort of effortlessly upper-class manners expected of them. (Don't call on weekdays to respond to invitations, dreadfully lower class) This is (most of) the third paragraph of the book: The Long Weekend started off strong with a great opening chapter. We meet these three women who only know each other because their husbands are friends, off on a weekend retreat. Oddly, all of their husbands decided at the last minute that they’d have to show up a little late, but that the women should go on ahead. I would really hate to spend even one night on a vacation with people I don’t really know without my boyfriend there as a social buffer, so this first chapter did a great job of establishing a tense setting. This has to be the lamest weekend getaway of all time. Further where it goes from there, not what I signed up for. I'm so glad this is over. From an acclaimed social and architectural historian, the tumultuous, scandalous, glitzy, and glamorous history of English country houses and high society during the interwar period
