The Time Traveler’s Wife is also, ironically, a product of its time. It is peppered with details from Niffenegger’s young adult years in Chicago’s art and music scene of the 80s, and steeped in the experiences of people who grew up in the 70s, giving it a specific appeal to GenX readers who were briefly ascendent as a trend-making demographic in the late 90s-early 2000s. Soriano, César G. (October 5, 2009). "Niffenegger finds 'Symmetry' in death for second novel". USA Today . Retrieved October 7, 2009. Oh, what a great ride this book was... her best book yet! Abby and Rob have just moved to London and have become couple friends with Sienna and Greg. After a few drinks one night the idea of swapping wives is, unfortunately, put out in the universe. Strictly platonic, of course, just to not be bored with another typical night. Of course I’m happy,’ she says. ‘How could I not be? This is the dream, isn’t it? A four-bed house in London.’ She gestures around, still not quite able to believe they own this place. Do her words sound as hollow as they feel? She hopes not. She’s determined not to ruin this for Rob – he’s worked so hard for promotion at his law firm, and neither of them could have known it would entail a huge move to a city she’s only ever been to once, and that was as a child. They are closer to Rob’s parents in Reading now, though, and for him that is another bonus. As of 2019, Audrey has confirmed that she is still working on the sequel, telling The Star: "Well, the interesting part is that the book is still not finished… [Alba] was born just before 9/11, in 2001, so today she would be 18. I've been spending a lot of time thinking about the news as it blows past us and extrapolating from what's going on today and what might be happening decades from now. It's part of what slows me down, how depressing the news has been for the past few years." Niffenegger credits writer/director Moffat with capturing the spirit of her book despite taking a few liberties with the adaptation. She said they had been in touch for years, after someone pointed out that a Moffat-penned episode of Doctor Who called “The Girl in the Fireplace” played like an homage to The Time Traveler’s Wife. Niffenegger returned the favor with an easter egg in her second novel, Her Fearful Symmetry.Niffenegger has degrees from the Art Institute of Chicago and Northwestern University. [4] As an undergraduate student at the Art Institute of Chicago, Niffenegger created her own book arts major combining etching, letterpress arts and bookbinding. [3] Her first project was called The Adventuress, which she self-described as "a novel In pictures". Niffenegger's second novel in pictures was titled The Three Incestuous Sisters which she created while completing her M.F.A. at Northwestern. [4] These two novels in pictures were subsequently published by Harry N. Abrams. The Three Incestuous Sisters was published in 2005 and tells the story of three unusual sisters who live in a seaside house; the book has been compared to the work of Edward Gorey. The Adventuress was released on September 1, 2006. The dinner. Greg’s work colleagues and their partners, none of whom ever want to give Sienna the time of day. It’s not Marty, Reuben or Harry who are the problem – it’s their wives. She can’t be sure but Sienna suspects that they look down on her. She’s not like them, not one of them, and certainly not good enough for Greg. Unlike Holly. I love reading Croft’s novels. She approaches something that others may write formulatically and twists into something fresh. I am a regular reader of author Kathryn Croft’s novels finding them fast paced and addictive, but I found this one a little disappointing. It was still a good read but for me didn’t hit the high standards of many of the other books.
