About this deal

I love this story! The author creates a diverse group of characters who are in dire need of the ear and shoulder of a friend. Riding at the same time on the same trains together is, hands-down, the best thing that happens to all of them.

It’s this wondrously uplifting sense of love and unconditional support that makes The People on Platform 5 such a poignantly touching and funny book to read. Heartwarming, funny, a delicious dive into the profound and ridiculous modern world in which we live. Clare Pooley reminds us why we need each other Tara Conklin, New York Times bestselling author A feel-good read, with great characters to care about, it takes current issues seriously but adds plenty of humour * Choice * It’s incredibly easy to read, it’s feel good, it’s warm, it’s certainly one to bump up your TBR list. The wondrously good thing about The People on Platform 5 is that for all the magic of the narrative, it also feels really down to earth and quite real.Every day at 8:05, Iona Iverson boards the train to go to work. As a seasoned commuter, she knows there are rules that everyone should follow: Take Piers, for instance, a hedge fund trader who initially comes across as a man in full control of his bombastically expressed and rather overblown life as a hardcore, take-no-prisoners denizen of London’s financial district but who, over the course of The People on Platform 5 is revealed as someone struggling with a slew of issues that do not match the impressions others have of him. Filled with delightful characters... this heart-warming book explores relationships and the dilemmas of everyday life * Candis * It might all seem a bit fairytale-ish but is there really a bad thing? Not even a little bit; frankly I love the idea that you can find just the right people to help you, that they all end up overcoming any reluctance they have to form bonds with people they’ve only ever cursorily nodded at, and that they form the kind of supportive grouping capable of turning lives around. To be honest, that sense of being enveloped in love and support is so profoundly present in The People on Platform 5 that it often feels like a great big warm hug; that’s not meant in any kind of flippant way at all but rather in the sense that being made to feel like you belong and matter is the one of the most powerful things you can do for anyone.

Clare’s memoir - The Sober Diaries - has helped thousands of people around the world to quit drinking. You will absolutely fall in love with Iona and Emmie and Sanjay and Martha and Piers and Jake and David. You will wish you could spend time with them on their commute and be part of their precious, special group. Rather cleverly too, the way in which these characters come together is not instantaneous; rather they take a while to let down their barriers, to actually come around to the idea that not saying “Hi” to a fellow commuter but becoming involved in their lives isn’t a bad thing, and it gives The People on Platform 5 an emotional heft and substance that makes the ending that follows feel well-deserved and truthful. The People on Platform 5 is nothing short of sheer and utter delight. It presents the best of humanity - the sweet and bashful kindness and generosity that lives in all of us. I can't think of a more joyful book! * Jesse Q. Sutanto, bestselling author of Dial A For Aunties *The chapters are character driven and short. This makes for a fast-paced story that keeps the reader engaged. Also, if you ever commuted, you would find this one to be hilarious. It is an easy read feel good book with a well drawn cast of fantastic characters who become unlikely friends on their daily commute. The key character of the group who brings Piers (known as Smart-But-Sexist-Surbiton) and others together including Sanjay (Too-Good-To-be-True New Malden), Emmie, Martha, Jake and David together is Iona (Piers christens her Crazy Dog Woman before he really gets to know her), a onetime IT girl of the Eighties and Nineties who, with the love of her life Bea, is a flamboyantly extrovert lesbian who works as a magazine therapist and a woman with a take-no-prisoners approach to bringing people together.

Continue Reading Clare Pooley has found a delightful way to bring home the point that we need each other Kelly Corrigan, New York Times bestselling author Clare Pooley graduated from Newnham College, Cambridge and spent twenty years in the heady world of advertising. What I enjoyed about the story is that author Pooley shows how people aren’t what they appear to be. The friendships formed are charming and adorable. I loved meeting the people on platform 5 - a delightful story about connection and friendship in a disconnected world * Marianne Cronin, author of The One Hundred Years of Lenni and Margot *I am having great time getting to know all of the individuals and learning together with them. All of them are wonderful people who just needs some reminder and intervention from strangers.
