About this deal

For in-house guests, our hotel spa offers access to The Gym 24 hours per day, 7 days a week, and access to the pool between 6am – 10pm. Julia has her own haunted past. Just two years earlier, not long after they moved to Wales, Julia’s husband died trying to save their daughter Lily from drowning in the river. But Lily’s body was never found, and Julia can’t let go of the hope that Lily might still be alive somewhere. She opened her home as a writer’s retreat to pay the bills. Julia can’t help but feel that as long as there is a possibility that Lily is alive, she needs to stay here and wait for her. I’m a huge Mark Edwards fan and have four of his other books sitting on my shelf. And even though this one may have fallen just a bit short for me...you know I’ll still be reaching for his next release!

I enjoyed reading this so much. The characters are ALL flawed - I don't think I liked any one of them especially. But I was intrigued by most of them and needed to know what was going to happen to them. There are a lot of twists and turns and the story kept me hooked from start to finish. Although I read this in chunks, rather than in one go, I didn't want to put it down. Very well done on that front. I read the end 40% or so in one go and it was EXHAUSTING! It all happens, it's unexpected, twisted and oh so fun. Truer words have never been spoken! That's how I felt going into this book. When I can finish a novel within 24 hours, you know it's a winner! I blew threw this one everyone! Let me tell you... this one is so full of twists it's like you're on a roller coaster in complete darkness and you don't know which way you're headed. Mark Edwards delivers yet another gripping and chilling novel. A complimentary copy was provided by Thomas and Mercer via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. MY THOUGHTS: I read The Retreat overnight, in one sitting, because I simply could not bear to put it down. Yes, it's that good. I defy anyone to read this without pulling the curtains a little tighter, without starting at every little noise. And if you have a child, I guarantee you'll be keeping her a little closer to home, that's if you let her out of your sight at all. There are four whiny, horrid, unlikable and duplicitous women. We are given very outlandish and mostly unbelievable reasons why they are this way. These four women do whiny, horrid and horrible things to each other and other women. We are given very outlandish and mostly unbelievable reasons why they do these acts. They go to a retreat. There, they do whiny, horrid, unlikable and duplicitous acts towards each other. But wait, one woman is also a psychopath and murderer. The twists are ridiculous, the psychological explanations flimsy and/or superficial and when people start to die. Oh well !

I’m not quite sure why exactly this book is getting so much hate. It’s an adequate thriller that kept me intrigued and guessing who the murderer was until the very end. Kudos, Mr. Edwards, for delivering yet another powerful piece that thrills and shows just how versatile a writer you have become. Deliciously paced with rich worldbuilding, The Retreat teems with questionable motives, unspoken frustrations, and hair-raising cliffhangers. I absolutely could not put this book down! Sarah Penner, New York Times bestselling author of The Lost Apothecary In a similar fashion to Nine Perfect Strangers, our characters, Katie Manning, former child star, her three besties, and her future sister-in-law, gather for a life-changing weekend with a promise that Ayahuasca tea will change their lives forever. is the place to enjoy good times and exceptional contemporary food with friends and family and is open to residents and non-residents for lunch and dinner, including our sensational Sunday Roasts (available 12-3pm).If you like psychological thrillers, with a bunch of characters that you probably won't like, then this will be up your street. I absolutely loved it. So many threads, more red herrings than a North Sea fishing trawler, cliffhangers galore and my absolute favourite - short, snappy chapters. It's a riveting, twisty turny read, a classic whodunnit with a killer final twist. John Marrs, bestselling author of The One

I am a big fan of Mark Edwards work and jumped at the chance to read his latest novel 'The Retreat'. Atmospheric and richly described, with surprises around every corner. From the terrifying prologue to the chilling final twist, Pearse has created another highly creepy thriller!' Allie Reynolds, author or Shiver Julia's husband drowned trying to save their daughters life but her daughter's body was never found. Julia still has hope that her daughter is alive due to not finding her body. Julia has now converted their home into a writer's retreat (this is so awesome!!!)Lucas, now too distracted to write by what he has learned of Julia's past decides he wants to help and hires a private investigator. Only, he doesn't tell Julia about it because one, he doesn't want to get her hopes up, and two, he's afraid of her reaction. She might not be so understanding of his generosity and mistake his kindness for his own personal gain. It's not far into the investigation and things hit a dead end. Suddenly, Zara, the private investigator says there's nothing else to investigate, and the police have done all they could to locate Lily, and then she too disappears. Lucas becomes unsettled by her disappearance, and suddenly people who have been questioned about Lily's disappearance are turning up dead. Surely this can't be coincidental. But when Lucas finally arrives at the retreat, he’s greeted with anything but the Zen peacefulness he was hoping for. Please remember that a psychological thriller must have the following for this reader: psychological congruence , psychological depth, believable twists and turns and plausible motivations for intrapersonal desicions and interpersonal actions. The highlight of this book for me was that I could not figure out what was going one and when I thought I had things figured out close to the ending, the Author threw in a little curve ball to keep things interesting. I liked how there wasn't 100s of characters and you got to read from each of the four ladies perspectives.

This getaway happens to be at a new age wellness retreat where the uh treatments are waaay out there. The couple running it are in my eyes very peculiar and the guests run from the normal to the what in the hell is going on. Right away we can sense discord amongst the group and when a member ends up missing...the fun begins. My only complaint was that, some of the chapters felt a little bit too long especially at the start. I think they could have been broken up more. And secondly, it could have been a little bit shorter. The middle did get a bit slow and dragged on a bit. I had no idea how this story was going to unfold, and I’m happy to say that I enjoyed where it ended up. Well done, sir.

I’m not sure whether I would agree with other reviewers in saying that the book was ‘atmospheric’. Even though it was set in the woods it didn’t quite give me the * vibes *. Full of spooky folklore and legends and scary ghost stories, this one definitely had me jumping at the slightest sounds and turning on all the lights in the house. From the instant I started reading “The Retreat,” I became ensnared by Sherri Smith’s exhilarating, suspenseful story. It begins with this great line: Sarah Pearse has done it again! The Retreat is a heart-pounding, adrenaline-soaked thrill ride. Once you start reading, you won't be able to stop.' Andrea Bartz, New York Times bestselling author of We Were Never Here
