Part of this is because THE CHARACTERS ARE AWFUL!!! Lira is nowhere near the cool violent siren I EXPECTED and DESERVED. She’s just mean and prissy and thinks she’s really funny and badass but god she is not at all. A lot like another red-haired fishy nemesis of mine. Basically, I LOVED To Kill a Kingdom. I’d read it again in an instant and will be telling everyone I know (especially the Disney fans) about it. *This* is the cinematic retelling I’d want to see on the silver screen in the next couple of years. Hollywood, you can cancel all of the rest of them. (Really.)

And Elian is just...boring. The siren song of the YA male love interest. A real poor little rich boy type situation. SO SORRY YOU MIGHT HAVE TO RULE OVER AN ISLAND MADE OF GOLD, ASSHOLE. WE WEEP FOR YOUR SUFFERING, WE REALLY DO. Beside me, Kahlia’s queen thrashes. She clutches at her throat and bats my cousin away. Angrily, Kahlia clings to her ankle and keeps her deep below the surface, the queen’s face a sneer as she tries to escape. It’s futile. A siren’s hold is a vice. Lira kills a mermaid causing her mother The Sea Queen, to exile her from Keto. This turns her from siren to human. Elian and Lira’s Relationship oh man. this is soooo dark. apparently everything disney taught me about the little mermaid is so very wrong! and honestly, i really dont mind. Yep, that's what she does. She rips out their hearts. Not to mention, she's the daughter of the mighty Sea Queen who is pretty much terrible all around. She's Ursula if Ursula was chewed up and spit out by the devil himself (but still manages to be attractive). Basically she's the reason Lira is the way she is - and her story is actually quite sad. One scene in particular that I can’t really say (spoiler) just made me so happy 😍😁. I was smiling so hard. It was just an entertaining read!! As the novel goes on, we discover that she is the true villain in this story. Thus, Lira and Elian try to overcome her because, by the end of the novel, she only wants to cause destruction and ruin her daughter. Kahlia

She does something else bad which I don't remember, but as punishment, her mother decides to banish Lira from the Sea Kingdom and turn her into a human, giving her the task of stealing a prince's heart before the Winter Solstice. Failure means she will stay a human forever. *gasp* the horror. Honestly, no. To Kill A Kingdom doesn’t have spice. It is more so filled with witty dialogue between the characters, and descriptions of each character from the others’ point of view. Soft and round, with skin like varnished wood and eyes a penetrating shade darker. His hair swings and coils tightly on his head, a beautiful mess of loops and spirals. Kahlia was right; he’s angelic. Magnificent, even. His heart will make a fine trophy.Kahlia breaks into a wild smile. “It’s been an age since your last kill, Lira,” she teases. “Are you sure you’re not out of practice?” Kill All Humans: The Siren Queen's ultimate goal is to find an artifact from the siren's deceased goddess and use it to wipe out all of humanity in an act of genocide. I am proposing a new law: Books that are not good should not be allowed to have really good opening lines. Because then I open them in Barnes & Noble and am like “wow I should buy this” and then I do (except not immediately because I don’t have B&N levels of money honey) and then I’m disappointed and I hate it and it’s honestly bad for all of us. And no, this doesn’t happen just once. There’s multiple moments in this book where they say things where I just had to look into the voice bc it made no sense for them to use “slang” in this world.
