When a poison tide flowing across the ocean threatens their island, Roz works with the resident creatures to ensure that they will have clean water, but the destruction of vegetation and crowding of habitats jeopardize everyone’s survival. Brown’s tale of environmental depredation and turmoil is by turns poignant, graceful, endearing, and inspiring, with his (mostly) gentle robot protagonist at its heart. Though Roz is different from the creatures she lives with or encounters—including her son, Brightbill the goose, and his new mate, Glimmerwing—she makes connections through her versatile communication abilities and her desire to understand and help others. When Roz accidentally discovers that the replacement body given to her by Dr. Molovo is waterproof, she sets out to seek help and discovers the human-engineered source of the toxic tide. Brown’s rich descriptions of undersea landscapes, entertaining conversations between Roz and wild creatures, and concise yet powerful explanations of the effect of the poison tide on the ecology of the island are superb. Simple, spare illustrations offer just enough glimpses of Roz and her surroundings to spark the imagination. The climactic confrontation pits oceangoing mammals, seabirds, fish, and even zooplankton against hardware and technology in a nicely choreographed battle. But it is Roz’s heroism and peacemaking that save the day. Robot Roz undertakes an unusual ocean journey to save her adopted island home in this third series entry.

Twelve Minutes to Midnight by Christopher Edge - review

Christopher Edge is an writer, freelance publisher and education consultant as well as an accomplished author of children's books. Note: I gave this book a full review because this book was published by Albert Whitman and Company. Edge writes in a style that meshes nicely with this type of story. He writes in a manner that is suspenseful, without being too scary or intimidating. His writing is also easy to read and understand. Another aspect that I liked about his writing style is that he doesn't hesitate to use a few words that kids might not be as familiar with, yet it was easy to tell within the context what the words meant.Despite that, new films have still found their way onto our screens and Eddie Izzard’s latest project, Six Minutes to Midnight, is fast-approaching. Penelope Tredwell is a thirteen-year-old orphan heiress of the bestselling magazine, The Penny Dreadful. Her masterly tales of the macabre are gripping Victorian Britain, even if no one knows she's the real author. One day a letter she receives from the governor of the notorious Bedlam madhouse plunges her into an adventure more terrifying than anything she ever imagined. Overall, I could not warm-up to the protagonist, could not buy into many of the plot points, and thought that the ending was somewhat absurd. I am unsure if I would read other books in this series; first books often have bugs to be worked out. I would not actively look more up but might sign book 2 out from the library if I came across it while looking for a bit of brain candy... Set in 1939 and loosely based on true events, the film tells the story of Thomas Miller (Izzard), a teacher who is sent to work at a boarding school on England’s south coast which plays host to 20 German girls, the daughters of affluent Nazi German families. Step into the past to discover a thrilling mystery about a sinister plot to shape and control the future, in this spine-tingling historical adventure from award-winning author Christopher Edge.
