While the Storm Rages | BookTrust

Phil Earle's new book, While the Storm Rages, is set in London during WWII, and follows Noah on his journey to save the neighbourhood's pets.If you manage to suspend your disbelief for the absurd premise – like how three twelve-year-olds could make it down the Thames for several days without being caught by police or Good Samaritans alike – then you'll be treated to a heart-warming story about the love we share for our pets and animals, and the bonds formed in times of strife. Without giving away too many spoilers, there is a sort of 'countdown' that occurs as the story progresses, which only adds to the urgency of Noah's quest. Once I realised it was happening I was torn up!

This is a book that starts as a crazy idea by Noah, and builds momentum until you simply cannot put it down. I'm not a huge animal lover, but the assorted animals in this book become characters in their own right and the reader is rooting for their success, along with the children. Hardly exactly seaworthy, the Ark this isn't. It was only supposed to be a stopgap before marching to Battersea dog's home where they'd hoped sanctuary awaited their pets: the best-laid plans etc. Slowly paced and linear, reflecting the children and their animals' journey. Bit too much violent animal death I think to pass on to the kids maybe? As Noah Price's dad marches off to fight, he asks his son to honour one vital promise: that he will keep their dog, Winn, safe. No matter what. Noah agrees, but his best intentions are crushed when the government advises people to have their pets put to sleep as part of the war preparations. (see below). Children are heartbroken, and queues outside vets' surgeries stretch for miles. But Noah is a resourceful, impetuous child. He won't just do what he is told, far from it. With his two friends in tow, Noah makes a pledge. To go on the run and save as many animals as he can: Whatever the cost.Another stunning read from one of the most authentic storytellers writing for children today' Lesley Parr, author of The Valley of Lost Secrets Together with his best friend, he comes up with a plan to launch a rescue mission to save their beloved pets. As his dad marches off to fight, Noah makes him a promise, to keep their beloved family dog safe. When the government advises people to have their pets put down in readiness for the chaos of war, hundreds of thousands of people do as they are told. But not Noah.
