About this deal

The only way that we could have become the band that we became is because New York at that time had everything going on,” says Diamond. “Now, you can get every song that ever influenced us on this phone, but at that time, New York truly was the only place in the world that had this confluence of all this different kind of music. New-wave stuff, no-wave stuff, post-punk, then the beginnings of rap. Dub, jazz, salsa, whatever.” Horovitz: “Do I have a really tiny head? I was walking here and I saw my reflection in a window and it looked like it was oddly small. I think I have a pinhead.” Rosen, Christopher (May 4, 2012). Simmons and Rubin formed a new label, Def Jam, and brought out the Beastie Boys’ first album, Licensed to Ill , in 1986. With its single (You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party!), the LP was like a call to arms for amped-up teenagers. The jokes became bigger and more stupid. The Beasties’ tour boasted an enormous hydraulic penis and go-go dancers in cages; they were banned from a hotel chain; the British tabloids wrote that they were the “world’s nastiest pop group” and that they made fun of children in wheelchairs (they didn’t). Horovitz was arrested for throwing a beer can at fans (he didn’t). The silly fun turned sour. Horovitz: “All of sudden we were the Sex Pistols.” They’re writing it without Yauch. For Yauch. Because of Yauch. He is the real hero of this book and, from what they say, the band. Diamond: “I don’t even want to go into the down coat… Really, the VW thing is more about other people’s stories. Everybody, after I wore it, was just like [stupid voice, moving his arms stiffly]: ‘Oh, yes, this guy stole this one from duh-duh-duh.’” This entertaining look at Beastie Boys history is as innovative and raucous as the band’s music.” — Publishers Weekly(starred review)

On November 13, 1982, Beastie Boys played Philip Pucci's birthday for the purposes of his short concert film, Beastie. [17] Pucci held the concert in Bard College's Preston Drama Dance Department Theatre. This performance marked Beastie Boys' first on screen appearance in a published motion picture. Pucci's concept for Beastie was to distribute a mixture of both a half dozen 16mm Bell & Howell Filmo cameras, and 16mm Bolex cameras to audience members and ask that they capture Beastie Boys performance from the audience's own point of view while a master sync sound camera filmed from the balcony of the abandoned theater where the performance was held. [17] The opening band for that performance was the Young and the Useless, which featured Adam Horovitz as the lead singer. A one-minute clip of Beastie was subsequently excerpted and licensed by Beastie Boys for use in the "Egg Raid on Mojo" segment of the "Skills to Pay the Bills" long-form home video released by Capitol Records. "Skills to Pay the Bills" later went on to be certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Berry left the group in 1982 (later forming Thwig, Big Fat Love and Bourbon Deluxe) and was replaced by Horovitz, who had become close friends with Beastie Boys. Mike is the craziest person,” says Horovitz. “He’s scattered, he’s all over the place. When you hold him down and tell him: ‘This is what you’re doing,’ he’s fantastic. But you have to hold him down. Like when he had to write his verse for Hello Nasty, we had to take his phone away to get him to do it. That’s what he was like about writing this book. We hid his phone.” Beastie Boys Setlist – Mar 7, 2008". Jambase.com. October 10, 2015. Archived from the original on July 26, 2020 . Retrieved March 5, 2020.

A common question about this book seems to be: should I read the print book or listen to the audiobook? The answer is ... Yes! There are great pictures and illustrations throughout the print book, so you’ll want to see those. But the audiobook is well-narrated by a mix of the band members, essay authors, and other contemporaries and celebrities who seem to simply be fans (for example, Will Ferrell brilliantly reads the fake album review mentioned above). With a style as distinctive and eclectic as a Beastie Boys album, Beastie Boys Bookupends the typical music memoir, featuring a collection of voices reminiscent of your favorite mixtape. Beastie Boys actually ran a Paul’s Boutique store answering machine

The band took the Licensed to Ill tour around the world the following year. The tour was troubled by lawsuits and arrests, with the band accused of provoking the crowd. This culminated in a notorious gig at the Royal Court Theatre, Liverpool, England, on May 30, 1987, that erupted into a riot approximately 10 minutes after the group hit the stage and the arrest of Adam Horovitz by Merseyside Police. He was charged with assault causing grievous bodily harm.
