Yeomen Warders, or Beefeaters to you and me, have long been emblems of London and — like red telephone and mail boxes — are often used to promote the capital to visitors. This was one of the reasons why, at an auction in June 2021, the museum chose to acquire a dress made the intriguing Colin Wild (reason #2), inspired by the Beefeaters’ red and gold state uniform. The third reason relates to a mystery: who wore this outfit and on what occasion is so far unknown. From Dot Cotton’s Alexon coat to Mr Fish’s maxi-smoking dress, here’s a peek into the Museum of London’s Fashion City exhibition. Our London Wall museum is now closed to visitors, but is still available for venue hire and private events.
Beefeater Costume, fancy dress hire,
This costume is an iconic costume for kids to use for fancy dress parties or even on World Book day. The Yeoman Warders are the ceremonial guards of the Tower of London where the Crown Jewels are kept to this day. Other famous duties include looking after the resident ravens and taking visitors on guided tours around the Tower.
Delivery
The new museum coming in 2026 will be situated at the heart of the capital’s historic Smithfield area next to Farringdon. The beefeaters (or Yeoman Warders as they are officially known) are the ceremonial guardians of the Tower of London. The red uniform is saved for special occasions, such as a visit from the sovereign to the Tower or if they are on duty for state occasions. Our initial, sketchy biography of Colin Wild patched together from contemporary newspaper accounts was recently augmented by his son Mark, who worked with his father for a short while in the 1970s. Please use the 3rd day in your 5 day hire, as the day of your event. We will often attempt to delivery earlier in the week if we can, but in these circumstances you will be notified in advance.
