For more information about the work of Farms for City Children, please visit www.farmsforcitychildren.org This is just amazingly well told. Morpurgo retains the dramatic poetry of the original, the bite and strength of the narrative, and the Christian content. My kids are absolutely loving it, I feel almost as if they are reading the original. This is athree-session spelling seed for the book Beowulfby Michael Morpurgo. Below is the coverage from Appendix 1 of the National Curriculum 2014.

This is a series of six lessons (including PP and worksheets) on Beowulf by Michael Morpurgo that focuses on different areas of the UKS2 N.C for Reading following CPD training on how to teach the N.C objectives whilst promoting a love reading. The N.C focus areas are: In this retelling, British Children's Laureate Michael Morpurgo breathes new vitality into the oldest English epic, originally written around 1000 A.D.--the tale of Beowulf, a Geat warrior who battles three evils so powerful that they destroy entire kingdoms. Standing head and shoulders above his comrades, Beowulf single-handedly saves Denmark from Grendel, a "merciless murderous ogre," as well as from his sea-hag mother. But it is Beowulf's third terrible battle, against the "death-dragon of the deep," in which he truly meets his match. Comprehensive planning but it is hard to know which resources link to which lesson. A number of resources and video clips are mentioned that aren't linked or attached.Morpurgo added: “Storymakers and storytellers like Barrie, and like all the previous winners of this award, have given us the hope and faith children need, we need, to keep flying, have sustained us through dark and troubled times, have banished doubt. To touch the lives of children, to witness their listening and reading silence, is reward enough in itself. This is simply the icing on the cake.” Some of the old English words were a bit hard to read but I managed to get through the book. Beowulf is an entertaining book. I recommend this book to anyone who likes adventure, violence and action. It has evil, a set of monsters and a great journey. I think age 10+ would love this book. I adored reading Beowulf. Songs are sung in praise of Beowulf, and the celebration lasts late into the night. But another threat is approaching. Grendel’s mother, a swamp-hag who lives in a desolate lake, comes to Heorot seeking revenge for her son’s death. She murders Aeschere, one of Hrothgar’s most trusted advisers, before slinking away. To avenge Aeschere’s death, the company travels to the murky swamp, where Beowulf dives into the water and fights Grendel’s mother in her underwater lair. He kills her with a sword forged for a giant, then, finding Grendel’s corpse, decapitates it and brings the head as a prize to Hrothgar. The Danish countryside is now purged of its treacherous monsters.

When I was reading this book I felt different every minute. I felt happy , then the next minuet I felt sad . W hen Beowulf had to face the monsters , I felt like he was definitely going to die this time … Artfully retold and magnificently illustrated, this companion volume to Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is made instantly accessible to children by a formidable children's book partnership. Beowulf knows he is putting his life in danger but is still willing to do what he has to do to save the people .In fifth-century Denmark, a murderous monster stalks the night, and only the great prince of the Geats has the strength and courage to defeat him. Beowulf's terrifying quest to destroy Grendel, the foul fiend, a hideous sea-hag and a monstrous fire-dragon is the oldest surviving epic in British literature. Artfully retold and magnificently illustrated, this companion volume to Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is made instantly accessible to children by a formidable children's book partnership. Text rationale:

Sessions focus on kennings, dialogue, figurative language, adverbials, and hyperbole (amongst others) before guiding the children through the creation of planning to finally write their own part of the legend. When there is danger in Her e ot , Beowulf (Prince of the G eats ) set s o f f to save the day from the villainous monsters. Beowulf is one of the most important texts in Old English and is believed to date from somewhere between 975 and 1025 - around the time of Alfred the Great. The author is unknown.

Overview:

On finishing, we started to watch the 2007 movie. WOW. Don't do that, really, don't, with kids. It started, and I realised it was CG, and I actually thought, oh, this might be less alarming, then.
