Some students, especially those who are well underway with preparing for the UCAT, find Section 1 easier as it tests similar skills to the UCAT Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections. Please note your application will not normally be considered by the admissions tutors for Medicine (A100 and A101) or Biomedical Sciences if you have not taken the BMAT.

If you don’t do well in the BMAT, it’s not the end of the road for you. As long as you have a basic understanding of the concepts and commit all the required formulae to memory, you’re good to go. Please note that as curriculums have changed over time, so has the Science and Mathematics content of BMAT Section 2. The BMAT Section 2 content specification has been revised for testing from August 2019 onwards. Questions in the practice papers marked with an asterisk assume knowledge that is not currently on the specification.

Remember to ensure you are registered for the test by 29 September, even if you feel exceptional circumstances may mean there is a risk you will not able take it. Section 2 is based on the knowledge typically included in non-specialist school Science and Mathematics courses. It tests your ability to apply this knowledge – possibly in unfamiliar contexts. This depends on the university you are applying to. As a rough guide, a score of 5 is considered average, 6 good and 7 or higher excellent for Sections 1 and 2.Each question, in Sections 1 and 2, is worth one mark. Total raw marks for each section are converted to the Bmat scale, which runs from 1 (low) to 9 (high). Scores are reported to one decimal place. Typical Bmat candidates will score around 5.0, which equates to approximately half marks. The best candidates will score around 6.0, and a few exceptional candidates will score higher than 7.0. Note your candidate number, as this is proof that you’ve successfully registered for the BMAT. It will start with a B, followed by five digits. For the Critical Thinking questions in Section 1, you will need to prove you can understand and evaluate arguments (for example, by identifying assumptions or flaws in an argument). They are used to decide which candidates to invite to interview and sometimes who gets the final offer. Since most applicants have exceptional academic achievements, universities rely on this additional testing. Bmat is designed to be demanding for very able candidates applying to study Medicine and other related subjects. It allows for the full range of marks with most candidates scoring in the mid-range of marks. So marks in the mid- to high-range show you have done very well. Everyone taking Bmat finds it difficult, but the test is an opportunity for you to show the universities that you have the potential to do well on the course.
