Sehr empfehlenswert! We follow Alice through her difficult childhood and teenage years with a selfish, uncaring mother, one brother who wants out and another who seems to sop up all his mother's negative energy. I was fortunate to get an advance copy of this book via NetGalley (I chose it because of the cover) and I am glad that I did because it did not disappoint in subject or characters.

In a Thousand Different Ways: the gripping, unforgettable new novel from the Sunday Times number 1 bestselling author If you don’t feel your own pain, you cannot recognise it in others. Our own suffering can cultivate the ability to help others. Lily isn’t well, Alice has finished school and she becomes her mothers full time career. Looking after Lily isn’t easy, and Alice does it and as a hobby she starts growing plants. Alice moves to London, she finds herself a little flat, becomes friendly with her neighbour Naomi and she struggles to find a job. Alice wears a mask, sunglasses, gloves, and she won't shake anyone's hand and this comes across as her being rather strange. I wanted to know, love and protect Alice. Her life starts out very tough and my heart ached for her. So many things happen in her lifetime and it’s a really emotive story. The characters are each so interesting also and their roles in Alice’s life is fascinating. This is a book that will stir many emotions. I have cried twice reading a book in my lifetime of thousands and the ending of this had tears running down my cheeks.Trust me when I say this is a book that is an absolute must read of 2023! Thank you so much for the publisher and NetGalley for giving me advance access to one of the most beautiful, moving books I've ever read. I hope this one wins some awards that's for sure. Like Eleanor Oliphant and Sally Diamond our protagonist Alice Kelly is different. Im discovering I have a love for damaged female protagonists, whether it's down to nature or nurture I love these girls.... Or maybe it's because I have raised a daughter on the spectrum and I see a little bit of her in all these special protagonists...it makes me want to fight the world for them and champion them! A gorgeous cover, alas the book did not live up to it. This was pretty poor and one for diehard Cecelia Ahern fans only. Tell me about your new novel, In a Thousand Different Ways. What was the inspiration and how did it evolve? Alice does not have an easy life, and her gift (or curse depending on how you look at it) make everyday activities like walking down a street overwhelming. Absorbing everyone else’s feelings sounds exhausting.

In a Thousand Different Ways by Cecelia Ahern | Goodreads

Alice has the skill to visualise in colours and fights through life coming from a suboptimal family. How can one master life, if distraction is a steady consonant in life? How can one move in a society without fear, if one can see and feel the darkest intentions of some people for instance at a children´s playground? And what happens, if someone with synesthesia comes across someone who reflects no color whatsoever? A story that will make you stop and think more times that I have wanted honestly. It’s all about kindness, acceptance of our different abilities in life and most of all , the fear of not actually firing in a mood that this society is so set upon and likes to put everyone in a box. I admit it's not a light, jolly tale but the veins of hope that run through it as the story progresses makes it such a beautiful and unique read. Alice has a gift- though she doesn't always perceive it this way. She views people's auras, her ability enabling her to detect and feel how others' feel vividly. Burdened with the pain, despair and anxiety of others she develops ways to shield herself from the transference of their colours. An interesting fictional recount of how someone with synesthesia may see life and the world around them. Absolutely incredible; from the toxic parent to the troubled and troubling brother and the girl with the strange power the characters are well balanced and tell a story of triumph and strength over adversity. What a fabulous book! I absolutely loved it and couldn't put it down. Alice lives in a chaos of other people's emotions which she sees as colours and which affect her own feelings unless she protects herself from them. The character descriptions are so beautifully written, the grief, love, violence and ambivalence that people feel throughout their lives and which Alice sees and interprets as their colours battle against her desire for peace and solitude. It's been a long time since I finished a book in one setting and quite liked it. What I didn't expect was for this to happen with a Cecelia Ahern book. To be more precise, she sees colours associated with all the people, and even plants, around her. Like auras, but that's not something she knows - yet.
