About this deal

Two sets of data were taken at 250 ISO and at 3200 ISO to see if there were relative performance differences with the different sized files (there weren’t any observable). Some of the data averages are rounded to the nearest ten so we don’t mistakenly imply that our precision is better than it actually is.

The Delkin CFexpress card reader also comes with both USB Type C to Type C and Type C to Type A cables. Transcend’s SD card reader features dual slots for both SD and microSD cards, and supports SDHC (UHS-I), SDXC (UHS-I), microSDHC (UHS-I), microSDXC (UHS-I) formats. It also delivers fast data transfer speeds thanks to its USB 3.1 capability. What makes CFexpress memory cards so special is the PCIe 3.0 interface technology which provides 1 GB/s data transfer per lane. Type B features two lanes, so theoretically you could be looking at 2GB/s transfer speeds which is very impressive. Tests were limited to two R5 bodies and one sample each of all of the cards, except the Delkin, where we were able to get an early copy of the 512 GB version with the new firmware. Both Delkin cards performed similarly. Regarding the low sample sizes, the consistency between bodies makes me confident they aren’t introducing bias, but an anomalous performer among the cards would definitely goof up the results. If you shoot video, or if you photograph sports, news or other fast-moving events, XQD is the memory card format for you.

Sony's CFexpress Type A/SD Card Reader was launched at the same time as the Sony a7S III's release, as this was the first camera to utilize the CFexpress Type A memory card format (the physically larger Type B cards already being commonplace). Below, is a table of the claimed maximum write and read speeds of the cards. As discussed earlier, dynamic heat reactions prevent there being a real minimum write speed figure, but even so, these maximum speeds show the manufacturers being pretty generous with themselves. These numbers are an industry convention that doesn’t have a great deal to do with actual card performance. To round out the table, we added a couple of additional rows with information just slightly more useful than the marketing claims. CFexpress Type A cards first began to appear on the market when Sony launched the a7S III mirrorless camera. Since then, Sony has continued to add compatibility for this card type to their new camera models, following the a7S III with the Alpha 1 and the FX3 Cinema Line camera. I’m sure others will follow suit. Overall, the ProGrade Digital CFexpress Type A & UHS-II SDXC Dual-Slot USB 3.2 Gen 2 Card Reader is an excellent choice for those looking for an affordable and high-speed memory card reader that can handle both CFexpress Type A and UHS-II SDXC memory cards. Its competitive price, sturdy build quality, and easy-to-use design make it a great option for professional photographers and videographers. Kingston says the reader gets better performance when used with Kingston memory cards, but it is compatible with SD and micro SD cards from all manufacturers.

At the moment, Sony has something of a stranglehold on the CFexpress Type A card marketplace. Although they are currently the only manufacturer of these Type A cards, I know for a fact that a few other card manufacturers are preparing their own entries into this marketplace. The compact device boasts a durable design with rubber covers on the end to help protect it from being dropped. This also means you can safely store your CFexpress card inside.

The affordable Delkin surprises here by coming in 8th after winning the buffer test that showed how many uninterrupted frames it could take before the buffer caused skipping. It appears to be a sprinter of a card, perhaps with firmware that is more cautious on heat throttling, but that is just speculation. The streamlining of laptop designs and expansion of memory card formats has led to the rise of memory card readers. From memory card readers dedicated to one card type to multi-use, all-in-one devices, there are all sorts of memory card readers out there to suit your needs as a photographers. XQD is a memory card format that was developed earlier this decade as a successor to CompactFlash cards. XQD cards are designed for professional uses, such as recording video or shooting sequences of images in your camera’s burst mode. A trio of card slots are spread neatly across the front, with CF, UHS-II SD, and MicroSD to choose from. A detachable USB Type-A cable is provided, so you will need an adapter if you intend to plug in to a USB-C port. Many card readers now connect to your computer using a USB-C plug, but adapters are readily available to convert to normal USB.

Photographers can now easily transfer large 4k files form one device to another in the fastest manner. The high speed transmission of 5Gbps is also one that is unique in ensuring that you have total freedom of transferring your pictures and photos faster. It supports wide compatibility of devices that will need its use. the choice will just be yours to make for better use. SanDisk Extreme PRO CFexpress Card Reader Testing with a UHS-II SD card yielded highly respectable video transfer speeds of 252MB/s read and 210MB/s write - not far off the much more expensive ProGrade Digital USB 3.1 Gen 2 Dual-Slot Card Reader. 202MB/s read and 107MB/s write figures in our testing when shifting images are also superb. The compact CFexpress card reader comes with USB C to USB C and USB C to Type A cables. This is one of the cheapest and most efficient options on our list of the best CFexpress card readers. Our Solid Connect™ recessed connection logic provides a secure connection point and minimizes wear and tear.
