About this deal

The Iron Throne once united the Sunset Lands, but King Robert is dead, his widow is a traitor to his memory, and his surviving brothers are set on a path of war amongst themselves. At King’s Landing, the head of Lord Eddard Stark rots on a spike for all to see. His daughter Sansa is betrothed still to his killer’s son Joffrey – Queen Cersei’s son, though not the son of her late husband Robert. Even so, Joffrey is now a boy-king, Cersei is his regent, and war is inevitable. That is not to say it is unrealistic. More, it is a hard pill to swallow, with the knowledge that all of this was commonplace a thousand years ago and less. So once again, the only hindrance to the book is only in our inability as 21st Century humans to see beyond our own lives and into the lives of others less fortunate than us. Bran makes friends with Meera and Jojen Reed. Jojen tells him he has greensight, but maester Luwin argues that magic is dead. The aftermath of book one, A Game of Thrones is at the core of this book, driving it forward. The first book had me hooked and engaged – A Clash of Kings made me fall in love with the series, A Song of Ice and Fire. A comet in the night sky, red and malevolent, the colour of blood and flame, can only be an omen of murder and war. Stannis’s child Princess Shireen dreams of dragons waking from stone. And a white raven has brought word from the Citadel itself, foretelling summer’s end. It has been the longest summer in living memory, lasting ten years, and the smallfolk say it means an even longer winter to come... The characters allotted chapters is upped to nine, promoting one supporting character from book one to fully fledged lead, and introducing an entirely new character to introduce us to the inner workings of an entirely new plot thread. Why ? Well because I do think that it is stretches the suspension of disbelief a little too much, that "magic" has such a pivotal part in the plot - notably the assassinations of a nailed on certainty for king (Renley) and Courtenay his staunch supporter, - and similar events - I haven't quite finished it btway). After reading authors of the calibre of Robin Hobb and Steven Erikson I would have to say that George R. R. Martin is not quite in the same league as a storyteller and that the characters are not as well formed or as deserving of the readers emotions. I first read Game of Thrones years ago and though I loved the complexity and beauty of the world, I think the graphic violence and sensuality was just a bit too much at the age I was then (around Joffrey's age)! Now, however, thanks to my best friend's insistence, I have had the incalculable pleasure of rediscovering the Song of Ice and Fire! And my word, it is intoxicating. A Clash of Kings is the epic story of five (Joffrey, Robb, Stannis, Renly, and Greyjoy) different kings all vying for Westeros and the Iron Throne, while Daenerys bides her time far away in the city of Qarth with her growing dragons, and even darker powers brew beyond the wall. The Night's Watch advances northwards from the Wall into the haunted forest. They stop at Craster's Keep, where a wildling man named Craster serves as an informant for the Watch. They continue north and make camp at a ruined fortress known as the Fist of the First Men, which serves as a strong defensive position. Concerned about the whereabouts and activities of the King-beyond-the-Wall Mance Rayder, Lord Commander Jeor Mormont sends Jon Snow and Qhorin Halfhand on a reconnaissance mission through the Skirling Pass.

Arya was on a bit of a travelogue – if a bit of a dark one – which was so much fun to be on because the world was amazing to explore. When Arya leaves King’s Landing, her journey of suffering begins as she beholds the grime nature of warring and battles. She runs from harm and even has to feed on worms to stay alive. The intense fighting causes her and others to act solely on survival instinct.

A Clash of Kings: Study Guide | SparkNotes

When Arya gets captured by the Lannisters, she gets taken to Harrenhal. Though the suffering is almost unbearable, she adapts, and when an opportunity arises, she takes it, causing the reclaiming of the castle. However, she soon realizes that her loyalty holds no value as war has two sides, the winner and loser. Arya’s escape, disguised as a boy, was immediately riveting as danger came not only from the Lannisters but from also her companions. In her position she’s in the forefront of what are the nastier scenes in the book: ‘Arya saw burned bodies impaled on sharpened stakes atop the walls, their hands drawn up tight in front of their faces as if to fight off the flames that had consumed them.’ But then her adventures appeared into what Bunyan might have declared a ‘Slough of Despond’ with one miserable form of captivity following another. German: Single volume, Fantasy Productions (2004): "Königsfehde". Two volumes, Blanvalet (2000): "Der Thron der Sieben Königreiche", "Die Saat des goldenen Löwen". (Translation: "The Seed of the golden Lion") The flaw in the book as an answer to Dawkins (I am not saying it is meant as that, just that it lends itself to such interpretation) is to me that it is somewhat artfully self indulgent (some of the sub plots are sheer Victorian whimsy) and the over reliance on magic and magii at key moments. JK Rowling shares the same weakness in my view though to a lesser extent in her magic stories of Hogwarts. But I think this work is a real response to atheism, and its flat reading of life, it shows however plausible the Dawkins position is up to a point (the Selfish Gene is a massive massive work!) it is missing something, called atmosphere, electricity, the pro and contra, atmosphere, catharsis, and hope!A Song of Ice and Fire: A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, A Storm of Swords, A Feast for Crows, A Dance with Dragons Five Book Special Bantam Sipcased Set Beautiful leather-bound slipcase editions of George R.R. Martin’s landmark epic A Song of Ice and Fire, the inspiration for the world’s most-watched television series, Game of Thrones. In King's Landing, Tyrion Lannister arrives to act as Hand in Lord Tywin's stead. Whilst intriguing against his sister Cersei, Tyrion improves the city's defenses. Learning of Renly's death, Tyrion resolves on two courses of action. Knowing that the Tyrells will not be happy following Stannis, he decides to make them a better offer. He also resolves to bring the Martells of Dorne into the war on his side. He sends Littlefinger to treat with the Tyrells and sends other messengers to Dorne. He wins Littlefinger's support by promising to make him the Lord of Harrenhal. The negotiations are solidified by marriage arrangements. Lord Mace Tyrell agrees to wed his daughter Margaery to King Joffrey I, whilst Prince Doran Martell agrees to marry his son Trystane to Joffrey's sister Myrcella. Stannis Baratheon, publicizing the claim that Joffrey and his siblings are bastards, claims the throne as Robert's eldest brother and therefore heir. He is supported by Melisandre, a foreign priestess who believes Stannis a prophesied messianic figure. Renly is supported by the wealthy Lord Mace Tyrell, and has married Mace's daughter Margaery. Robb's mother Catelyn Stark meets with Renly and Stannis to discuss an alliance against Joffrey's family, the Lannisters, but she is unable to reach an agreement with them. Melisandre uses magic to send a shadow to assassinate Renly in the middle of the night, and Stannis besieges Storm’s End, Renly’s castle; after witnessing Renly's death, Catelyn and Renly's bodyguard, Brienne of Tarth, flee the scene. A Clash of Kings is the second of seven planned novels in A Song of Ice and Fire, an epic fantasy series by American author George R. R. Martin. It was first published on 16 November 1998 in the United Kingdom, although the first United States edition did not follow until March 1999. In May 2005 Meisha Merlin released a much-delayed limited edition of the novel, fully illustrated by John Howe.
