About this deal

Our guide to the best baby food brands includes some familiar names – Ella's Kitchen, Heinz For Baby and HiPP Organic – as well as own brands such Aldi Mamia Organic and Asda Little Angels. We asked parents to tell us which they preferred, and which their babies liked the best. I did find one of the organic porridges (I think it was Plum but can't remember 100% now) that had no powdered milk in and she was fine with that. But not all organic ones have no powdered milk in so you will just have to look at the ingredients. Best and worst baby products : parents reveal the accessories they can't live without, and which were a waste of money Growing-up and toddler milks are marketed as an alternative to whole cows' milk for toddlers and children over 1 year old. There's no evidence to suggest that these products provide extra nutritional benefits for young children.

Although it's available in pharmacies and supermarkets, it's recommended you only use it on the advice of a health professional. Not all milk is suitable for feeding babies. You should never give the following types of milk to a baby under 1 year: Other popular brands include Cow & Gate , Heinz for Baby , HiPP Organic and Organix . These all have huge ranges, including purées and meals in glass jars if you're looking to cut down on your plastic use. Only use soya formula if it has been recommended or prescribed by a health visitor or GP. Growing-up milk (toddler milk)There are some concerns about the fact that soya contains phytoestrogens. These are found naturally in some plants. Lactose intolerance is rare in babies. Symptoms include diarrhoea, abdominal pain, wind and bloating. The chemical structure of phytoestrogens is similar to the female hormone oestrogen. Because of this, there are concerns that they could affect a baby's reproductive development, especially in babies who drink only soya-based infant formula.

Babies' low body weight means they take in much higher amounts of phytoestrogens than older children or adults who eat soya products as part of a varied and balanced diet. She has been fine on baby rice, fruit and veg but I gave her some organic plain baby porridge today and wherever the porridge touched her face it turned red and blotchy with little white welts. Less expensive than jarred products, especially those that are simply puréed fruit or vegetables - you can make these combinations far more cheaply at home with a hand blender.Research shows that switching to follow-on formula at 6 months has no benefits for your baby. Your baby can continue to have first infant formula as their main drink until they are 1 year old. goats' or sheep's milk (but it's fine to use them when cooking for your baby, as long as they are pasteurised) The NHS recommends waiting until your baby is six months old to introduce solid foods. Until this age, they should be getting all the nutrients they need from breast milk or infant formula. Hungrier baby formula (hungry milk) is suitable from birth, but ask a midwife or health visitor for advice first. Do you think this is an allergic reaction to something in the porridge, and if so what? And is this likely to cause problems with other foods? Also is she likely to grow out of it and has anyone else experienced this? This 1st happened a few days ago, so I left the porridge for a few days and tried again and the same thing happened so it must be the porridge causing it as she hasn't reacted like that to anything else. No other symptons and her poo's have been fine. Partially hydrolysed formula (comfort formula) is not suitable for babies who have cows' milk allergy. Lactose-free formulaThe cows' milk in formula contains 2 types of proteins – whey and casein. First infant formula is based on whey protein which is thought to be easier to digest than other types of formula.

It turned out that my daughter actually had a milk protein allergy. After trying a little yogurt and some cheese the same rash occurred so I took her to the GP who referred her to a specialist. She had some allergy tests done and was referred to a dietician. They say that most children grow out of it by the time they are 5 but we have been very fortunate as our dd grew out of it by the time she was 18 months, so life is a lot easier now When your baby is 1 year old, they can start to drink whole cows' milk or sheep's or goats' milk (as long as these milks are pasteurised). The instructions for making up anti-reflux formulas may be different to standard formula. The usual guidelines for how to make up baby formula recommend using boiled water that has stood for no more than 30 minutes, so that the temperature is still above 70C.I have avoided the porridge with milk powder and cow's milk since (used soya the other day and she was ok with that) but gave her a little bit of cheese the other day and she came out in the same rash, so I think it must be the cow's milk protein that is the problem. The thing that confuses me though is that she didn't seem to have any problem with formula milk (which is also cow's milk isn't it?) although she is breast fed and only had formula a couple of times. Do you know why this might be?
