About this deal

I wanted to know if through an adapter, I could connect the old MBP from its Mini-DisplayPort to the USB-C of the monitor and have a video signal. USB Type-C has a new feature called Alternate Modes. If your USB-C cable has this feature, you can connect to non-USB devices that support the same Alternate Mode. For example, if your USB-C cable has the Thunderbolt Alternate Mode, you can connect to Thunderbolt devices. There's no setting to turn on—your device automatically uses the appropriate mode if it's supported. USB-C Alt Mode display output should also provide support for USB Power Delivery (USB-PD). If your laptop supports USB-PD (and many do), you can charge your laptop and output to a monitor with a single cable. The MHL Alternate Mode lets you project video and play audio on an external display that supports MHL.

Make sure your PC (or phone), the external display, and the cable all support DisplayPort or MHL alternate modes. Select the Start button, then type device manager and select Device Manager from the list of results. And I also bought the following cable in the hopes that I could use it to connect to the monitor from my PC (using gtx 1080 -- it doesn't have type-c -- only display port and hdmi). The Alternate Mode feature must be supported on the PC or phone's hardware and software, and the connected device or dongle. You might also need a specific USB-C cable. Make sure the device or dongle is connected to the USB-C port on your PC (or phone) that supports the correct Alternate Mode. For example, a DisplayPort Alternate Mode adapter should be connected to the USB-C port on your PC (or phone) that supports DisplayPort Alternate Mode. One of the major advantages of DisplayPort over USB-C is that you can use it more easily in newer, slimmer devices such as notebooks, tablets, phones, or displays. Since the USB Type-C connector is the latest USB interface that almost all new devices sport, this reduces the number of ports required on any one device. Your PC (or phone) might not provide enough power to the USB device. Plug a power adapter into your USB device, or try to use a different PC (or phone).

DisplayPort, or USB-C for a 4K Monitor? Should You Use HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C for a 4K Monitor?

No video data will be received by the display, hence there will be no image on the screen. Doing this will not harm your device. A warning message might also be displayed on the screen of the USB product to notify the user about the incompatibility. Your PC (or phone) has a low battery, so it has temporarily limited the amount of power it can provide to the device. Don't worry too much if your device doesn't support DisplayPort over USB-C. There are adapters available for DisplayPort over USB-C to DisplayPort, DVI, VGA, and HDMI inputs. DisplayPort recommends using adapters that are DP certified. The Alternate Mode feature must be supported on the PC's hardware and software, and the connected device or dongle. You might also need a specific USB-C cable. Now, you may be wondering, if USB-C is supposed to replace everything else, why it’s not even more common. The answer comes, once again, from manufacturers playing fast and loose with the standard.

Unfortunately, some combinations of hardware and software may cause problems. If this happens, you may get a notification that there’s something wrong with the USB-C connection. We’ve provided some tips below to help you fix things. And if you want to change whether you see notifications about USB issues, here's how:Swipe down from the top of your screen to open action center. The notification appears in action center with the error code listed there. Make sure your PC, the external display, and the cable all support DisplayPort or MHL alternate modes. It’s worth to be noted that the DisplayPort and HDMI connections on this port support DisplayPort 1.2 and HDMI 1.4 standards, respectively. A battery icon with a warning on it appears in the system tray to indicate that a slow charger is connected, and the battery is discharging. The Slow charger notification might appear too. In addition, we’d recommend choosing a new HDMI cable unless you’re confident that yours is fairly new. The HDMI specification has also changed over time, and older cables might not give you HD, or even 4K. For the best performance, look for HDMI 2.0 or HDMI 2.1, but anything over 1.4 should function.
