About this deal

This isn’t an instant art medium. Both paper strips and paste and paper mache clay will take time to dry. Fortunately, if we keep air moving around our projects we can speed things up. Use thin layers of paper mache. Glue something! When cooled, you can use this glue to make paper mache, craft projects, and anything else. It's totally non-toxic, too.

Can any of the mixtures be used for making a fairy house that will be kept outside? Is there a special preparation to make it more waterproof? (And thanks for coming up with these recipes!) If you love how amazing flour is, you may also adore our 3 ingredient salt dough recipe!!) You will also need

Finishing Touches

Almost all of the projects on our paper mache blog use a firm armature made over a pattern. The armature makes the sculpture strong, and the paper mache gives us a nice surface for our paint. Put your wet sculpture in front of a fan. OPTIONAL: some people like to add a tablespoon of salt to help preserve the paper mache glue – but we have never needed to do this. If you live in an area with high humidity you may wish to add some hi Jamie! i would use recipe 2 which is easy and very durable. each recipe makes about 4-5 cups of clay, so you can decide how many cups you might need. have fun!! 🙂

How to Make Paper Mache - The Spruce Crafts

While most paper mache “pros” use hot water to dissolve the flour more efficiently, you can use cold water and just note that it likely won’t be as smooth of a mixture, but kids can more easily help with each step. With hot water, you don’t need to worry about boiling anything on the stove. After your finished piece has fully dried, it’s time to decorate. Enjoy adding paint and other flourishes to really let your personality shine through! If you will be making paper mache over more than one day, you will need to make new batches of your flour and water paste each day, as it tends to break down and may even mold between sessions. As mentioned you can add a tablespoon of salt or two and that can help preserve it for longer. Having said that, (and as mentioned earlier), I still have a paper mache piggy bank, that I made well over 20years ago at summer camp. And no salt was added to that! How to make Paper Mache Paste (Recipe with Flour) Mix the glue and the water together until they are combined, then your paper mache paste is ready to use.

Methylcellulose paste– In the past I often recommend Elmer’s Art Paste for school classes, because you can make up a gallon of the paste in advance, and it never gets moldy. It’s also gluten-free, so you don’t have to worry about your students’ allergies. Form our years of making paper mache at summer camp and in the classroom, we find that flour is strong and durable. PVA glue, like elmer’s glue, of course is also strong and durable, but as flour is so cheap and also eco friendly, I would always put the flour paper mache recipe first. The only “upside” of a paper mache glue recipe, is that it is “whiter”. A flour recipe will be slightly off white. So if you are using white tissue paper in your craft, you may like a glue recipe instead. Most people however, tend to paint their finished projects, so the colour of the paste really shouldn’t make a difference!Cooked paper mache paste will dry almost clear, unlike the raw paste, and the surface of your paper mache sculpture will be slightly smoother. The classic way to create a paste for paper mache is to just use flour and water. Every paper mache artist has a slightly different opinion about what paste method is best. Some people don't like using flour because they think it is has less strength than glue and that it rots more easily, but others swear by this method, saying the original is the best. If you want a smoother finish, consider the “cooked” paper mache paste option below. Method 2: “Cooked” Paper Mache Paste with Flour You can store your homemade paper clay dough in the fridge, wrapped airtight in plastic wrap or plastic bag for 2 to 3 weeks. You can also store the paper mache clay dough in the freezer for much longer. Comparison of the 4 recipes If you’re making it in your garage, open all the doors and windows so you don’t trap a cloud of wet air inside.
