It’s all labelled and the display is clear – although in bright sunlight you’ll be squinting. The main buttons are mode, discrimination, and sensitivity and they work on a plus and minus toggle. There are iron audio and frequency adjust buttons too. Coins: programmed to find most types of monies while rejecting foil and iron. Certain unnecessary objects such aluminium cans may be detected. The top of the ACE family, the 400i has new Iron Audio feature, a powerful DD coil, a higher frequency, and volume control headphones. This particular model comes with a few handy extras that can make all the difference as you prospect. With the detector, you’re getting a search coil cover and a control box cover. The latter accessory slips onto your control box to protect it from light drizzles. The clear plastic window ensures that you can still take advantage of all the functionality the device has to offer. On top of those two protective extras, the machine also comes with a carrying case and Garrett’s EasySound headphones. Garrett Ace 400i is a little more advanced for a novice, but I think you can get used to it pretty fast. This model is great when it comes to beach metal detecting, but please beware that it’s not fully waterproof, only the coil so you’ll have to make sure you don’t drop it in the water.

This model is also armed with the Garrett Clearsound Easy Stow Headphones with an inline volume switch. The 400i comes out of the box in three separate parts with the coil, the straight shaft, and the s-shaft separate from one another. You will need no other tools than the ones provided with the metal detector to put it together. The Discrimination button is used in conjunction with the Accept/Reject button to ensure that trash is rejected. Hi Ian, I think the 400i is more advanced and pricier due to that, I would recommend you try the 250 or 300 first if you want.

Garret has added digital target ID with numerical information to the ACE 400 which is a great move as the 350 didn’t have that level of tech. Cons are the pre-set ground balancing – but then this isn’t an issue for a beginner, and iron audio that bumps up the price can drive you insane targeting trash. For that reason, mine is usually off.
