About this deal

Adams has been at the centre of power within Sinn Féin since the early 1970s after he was released from internment without trial. He has always denied claims that from 1972 onwards he held a senior position, firstly in the Belfast IRA, and later as overall leader of the Provisionals. The ex-politician's most recent book 'My Little Book of Tweets' was published in 2016, and features a collection of his most bizarre tweets as well as selfies and jokes.

Adams has previously published a number of books, both fiction and non-fiction, including Before the Dawn: An Autobiography (2015), Cage Eleven (2014), The Street and other stories (2014) and An Irish Eye (2007), all published with Brandon, an imprint of The O'Brien Press. Speaking at a Peile an Phobail event in Belfast on Monday, Adams reportedly said: “The British never fed us. They never had any food. Asked about the IRA, whose armed campaign during the Northern Ireland Troubles Adams defended for decades, he said: “I would wish that no one had been killed or injured in the course of the conflict.” Indeed, the peace process itself is based upon an inherent injustice for victims of terrorism – of bringing terrorists into Government. The biggest terrorists of the Troubles, such as the late Martin McGuinness, gave up “armed struggle” in exchange for becoming “Co-Premier” of Northern Ireland.Adams said the bombing would undermine his efforts to obtain a visa for fundraising in the US, which was one of many “tactical reasons” for not wanting further violence. Along with the cessation of extradition requests, there has also been widespread use of the Royal Prerogative of Mercy in Northern Ireland – at least 418 royal pardons were issued between 1979 and 2002, many for terrorists. In a statement released through his solicitor on Tuesday night, Adams lawyer said his client “had no involvement and had no knowledge whatsoever in Denis Donaldson’s killing”. Adams’s focus on Brexit and the EU is part of a strategic shift in Sinn Féin policy towards Europe. Significantly, both the DUP and the UUP were minor players in these debates. Indeed, in the case of R v Adams the heavy lifting was done by distinguished lawyers and civil servants – and not by populists. In the heart of Westminster, there is still a deep-seated consciousness of the legitimacy of what the State was trying to do at the height of the Troubles.

It said the convicted tax fraudster Thomas “Slab” Murphy, the jailed reputed leader of the IRA in South Armagh, personally asked the republican leadership that Donaldson be killed. He told The Andrew Marr Show on BBC One that it was “doable” to grant Northern Ireland special designated status as the region had voted 56% in favour of staying inside the EU in the 2016 referendum. The DoJ said in 2021 that Adams was ineligible for compensation for a miscarriage of justice because it was the analysis of a legal point that led to the guilty verdicts being overturned, rather than a new or newly discovered fact.
