At this point, I admit, my expectations were being met. And then things went from bad to worse. “Taken together, the six habits you’ll learn here won’t just get you to excellence, they’ll make you happier—and the data proves it. The positive emotions of engagement, joy, and confidence that define the high performer’s emotional state can be yours.”

The “taking responsibility” chapter was my favourite & gave me a tough wake up call of how I can’t remain in a state of “learned helplessness” where the world and life is happening TO me. I have to learn to take responsibility. But also understanding a fine line between always thinking something is my fault = taking responsibility - that’s not true. “high performance is about what you do; it isn’t about constantly blaming yourself”. HABIT FIVE: DEVELOP INFLUENCE 1. Teach People How to Think. In every situation of influence, prepare by asking yourself how do you want other people to think about (a) themselves, (b) other people, and (c) the world at large. Then go communicate that consistently. Shape people’s thinking by saying things like: “Think of it this way . . .” “What do you think about . . .” “What would happen if we tried . . .” 2. Challenge People to Grow. Observe people’s character, connections, and contributions, and actively challenge them to develop those things even further. Ask people if they gave their all, if they could be treating those around them better, and if they could give even more or serve with even greater excellence and distinction. 3. Role Model the Way. Seventy-one percent of high performers say they think about being a role model daily. They want to be a good role model for their family, the team, and the greater community. So ask, “How can I handle this situation in a way that will inspire others to believe in themselves, be their best, and serve others with integrity, heart, and excellence?” I won’t share the six habits of high performance (HP6) that are the heart of the book. And the reason is that we don’t learn if we don’t learn in context. And that task is up to the author, not me, a reader.

The topics Brendon discusses in this book revolve around things that I’ve been struggling with for some time. Because of this personal connection to themes mentioned, I have tried to absorb as much as possible. I’ve gone so far as to write a printout summarizing the 6 main habits to hang up on the wall of my cubicle at work.

Five Books interviews are expensive to produce. If you're enjoying this interview, please support us by donating a small amount. I decided to flip through to the "summary guide" at the end, to see if any of the advice was interesting enough to read more of the book. It wasn't. Basically a rehash of 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, but less elegant and somehow even more cliche. Organize Tomorrow Today: 8 Ways to Retrain Your Mind to Optimize Performance at Work and in Life (Hardcover) seek clarity- about who you want to be, how you want to interact with others, what skills you need, and what kind of service you want to render To me, he puts a flag squarely in ground zero about aligning passion and purpose, relentless hard work, and creative exploration of what is. What he’s achieved speaks for itself.

This is a conversation about personal growth, overcoming the darkest moments and moving to a brighter future. If you don’t ask for help, the right people can’t come into your life. So if the universe isn't giving you what you want, perhaps it’s because amidst all your distractions and silence, the universe just doesn’t know what you're asking for.” Looking ahead, Gordon considers his future goals, including the pursuit of a third Michelin Star in France, which he regards as his final swan song in the culinary world. Despite his remarkable achievements across a forty-year career, Gordon and his team are far from finished. Damian shares a life-changing piece of advice, given to him by the best teacher he’s ever had. He analyses what the most important moment of a lesson is and how good teachers, coaches and parents can utilise this to make the biggest impact.

Throughout the book, there are high performance pit stops laying out practical activities you can do to put some of the ideas described in the book into action. For example, reflecting on how you manage your time and how to become better at it. It’s time to put what you’ve learned into practiceA fantastic book that will help you think like an Olympic champion - in mind, body and spirit. DAME KELLY HOLMES
