About this deal

A couplet is two successive lines that end with a rhyme. Shakespeare famously used these in his sonnets. Heroic Couplet Widely regarded as the ‘Father of English poetry’, Geoffrey Chaucer wrote some of the most renowned works of the English language, including ‘The Canterbury Tales’ and ‘The Book of the Duchess’. The standalone poem ‘Rondel of Merciless Beauty’ (here translated from Middle English) recounts Chaucer’s heartbreak after being left by the love of his life, pledging his everlasting devotion to her even though it pains him. 16. "Love Comes Quietly" by Robert Creeley Closed form is much more structured, and governed by specific rules, or patterns. In closed form poetry specific poetic structures may repeat throughout the poem, perhaps to create rhythmic effects. A poem is usually about, or alluding to, a specific topic or theme. Some of the most common themes that poets write about are:

The poem transmits the meaning of helping from the heart, reaching out to those in need and soothing the pain felt by others. It doesn't need a hero to work wonders, only need a heart to... Open form is very free - it doesn’t have to follow traditional or specific patterns. This style of poetry may not follow any rules at all or it might use small elements of traditional forms of poetry. When looking at an open form poem consider some of the structural ideas, such as rhyme and the rhythm, and think about how these have been created and why.

52. "Defeated by Love" by Rumi

In 2009, Carol Ann Duffy made history when she was appointed the first female and openly lesbian British poet laureate. ‘Love’ is a perfect example of the monologue-style poems she is known for, fitting in with her usual sensory and emotional style of writing; here, she describes love as beautifully boundless, like the light of the sun or the crashing sound of waves. 26. "The Love Poem" by Carol Ann Duffy Epitaph: The epitaph is another type of poetry connected to death. These poems discuss the death of a person in either a humorous or solemn manner. In ‘Heart to Heart’, Rita Dove rejects the typical clichés that come with falling in love. With her down-to-earth approach to the topic, she assures the intended reader that although she may struggle to show her love, that doesn’t mean it’s not there. 25. "Love" by Carol Ann Duffy you’re where I stand, hearing the sea, crazy for the shore, seeing the moon ache and fret for the earth. When morning comes, the sun, ardent, covers the trees in gold, you walk

A simile compares one thing directly to another thing, often by using the 'as as' combination. For example: I was searching for a short poem that encapsulates the love I have for my wife. When I saw this, I knew. My wife's birthday is in April. The double meaning of marrying an April girl really... Yes! Been there! It kinda takes away from the romance. It might be best to keep trying to fly south. Ballad: A ballad is a type a poetry that is composed with the intention that they will be sung. Oftentimes, these stories are dramatic in nature. This is one of Sexton’s best poems. In it, she elegizes her parents, both of whom died a few months apart. Her mother from cancer and her father due to alcoholism. She speaks about her feelings and beliefs about death and describes the poet’s own emotions in reaction to the death of her parents and the actions she chose to take afterward. She begins the poem at a funeral she has no desire to participate in. Here are the last lines of the poem: Language is like the engine of a poem. What fires it up is thinking about the power of the language. This can be a strategy for getting to the heart of a poem. Epic poems mostly carried over from ancient cultures devote an extraordinary number of words to telling the entirety of an adventure from beginning to end.
