About this deal

The thing in the story I did not enjoy before the animals sailed to Britannia was the language because whilst the author described the animals lives, the words were not very imaginative. There were many parts of the book that I really liked reading about. I especially enjoyed reading about the things Romans did when they travelled to Britannia because I learnt they had to do chores when they really wanted to relax because they thought they were on holiday.

While I have given this a top score, this is because it will have appeal to a KS2 readership, and is funny. I did think it could have been improved however. The first person might have worked better than a third person narrator, I expected to hear Julius talking to me directly. Goods that by reason of their nature, cannot be returned - (Items such as underwear, where the 'hygiene patch' has been removed, or cosmetics where the seal has been broken). My favourite part is when Julius says to the little mouse, “Why are you wearing a nappy?”(Joseph, 8)

During a visit to the stinky lake he wanders off and is followed by Cornelius, a know-it-all, chatterbox warthog who he finds quite annoying. They fall into what they think is a sinkhole, where they find a grumpy, old lion called Milus. The history in this book was very good because the book tells you about how the Egyptians lived. I would like to learn more about the Egyptians because I am interested in how you might become a pharaoh in Egyptian times. I would like to read a lot more books by Gary Northfield because he writes very funny lines in his books. I enjoyed this book because I thought it was really funny. In the book I thought that the chapter called 'bath time' was the best part. I thought that the history in the book was realistic as I thought that the god was real. I explored the history more at school and I wanted to read more books by this author. I thought the book was brilliant.

I particularly liked the character Cornelius. This is because he was brave, kind and helpful and whenever one of the animals in the book needed help or comforting, Cornelius would be there in a jiff! When they get there they meet a group of other animals: Felix, who is a nice but dim giraffe, Rufus, the simple antelope, Lucia, the ditsy, vegetarian crocodile and Pliny, the feisty, little mouse. We join Julius and his friends on their epic adventure. They are made to join a gladiator school run by Septimus, the angry gladiator teacher, who sets about training them to fight the deadliest battle of their lives!I really enjoyed this book because it was really interesting and creative. I also liked this book because teaches children about the Romans and how they lived in Roman times. I really liked studying about Romans and other parts of history and this book made me want to learn even more. I would recommend this book to children the same age as me so that they can learn about Romans and become interested in them like me. Julius Zebra is a very funny book which shows how a group of animals go from being washed up on the shore to being worshipped in a temple. I greatly enjoyed it and my favourite character was Julius' brother, Brutus, because he wouldn't go anywhere without his wig of seaweed! And of course this book is also stuffed to the brim with illustrations. At times stand-alone just giving a better look at things, but mostly a continuation of the story. It makes the read even more engaging and fun (and also funnier).
