About this deal

When it comes to electric pumps, you may see the phrase "hospital grade" and assume that it means the pump is safer, of higher quality, and more effective. However, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) does not recognize the term "hospital grade," and it is more of a marketing strategy to advertise the effectiveness of a particular pump. We were surprised at how many parts it has for being such a small pump. Although it wasn’t difficult to set up, it was time-consuming to do so. We also felt like the battery wasn’t strong enough, even on the highest setting, and that it wasn’t the most effective pump in the bunch. You can hire breastfeeding pumps from hospitals and maternity units, too. These are electric pumps that are super-efficient at expressing a high volume of milk in a short period of time. What is the difference between an open and closed system pump?

Have you ever wondered which breast pump has the MAX suction? With the help of a mechanical engineer, I created a Boobie Barometer to test 22 different breast pumps. (Please remember that MAX suction does not always mean the BEST suction. Watch this video here to learn more about that!)However, this pump isn’t the quietest of the bunch. We tested it while making a phone call, and the person on the other end clearly heard it. It also has a lot of suction and speed options, which felt overwhelming at first, but with the help of a lactation consultant, we were able to find the right settings and save them for future pumping sessions.

This pump has two motors and the cool thing about it is that you can get the MAX suction levels on both sides! This pump measured 294 mmHg. The company claims 270 mmHg. So this was another pump that I was able to get a higher suction reading than the company claimed, and let me say it again, you can get that suction on both sides at that same time!! This is really unique.Double pumping 】Efficiently express milk from both breasts at the same time with the double breast pump feature, saving you time and effort.

Another significant difference is that the Stride has a suction level of 300 mmHg, which stands for millimeters of mercury and is the standard unit of measurement for pressure in medicine. Despite having a robust motor, the Stride is very quiet, and we would definitely wear it during a Zoom call. If the thought of apps and wearable pumps sounds overwhelming, the Medela Pump in Style with MaxFlow is an excellent choice. Its interface is super simple and has just four buttons, allowing you to turn it on, move to the letdown phase, or adjust the suction power.Open system pump - Open system pumps do not have a barrier, but it's important to not that the risk of contamination is very small. There's no right or wrong pump to use and it's still important to sterilise whichever breast pump you're using regularly. How we tested and chose these breast pumps The S12 Pro is highly portable. Since it’s a wireless pump, we found it light enough to carry in a daily bag and get a pumping session in while doing chores around the house. Although it’s relatively quiet, it looks pretty bulky under clothing and would definitely be detectable during a Zoom call. Even on the lowest level, the S9 Plus' suction was quite strong, especially when plugged into the wall. Unlike other pumps, it starts in an expression or letdown mode (as opposed to a massage or stimulation mode), but there are multiple massage modes to choose from should you wish to start in a gentler setting. We also appreciate its transparent flanges, as they made it easy to confirm that milk was being expressed. It's not important to have a breast pump. If you're not finding it comfortable or you're having any issues, you can talk to your midwife, health visitor, GP or other healthcare worker who will advise you on the other options and routes you and your baby could use. We couldn’t love the Elvie Wearable Breast Pump more than we already do. We think it’s a great option for commuting, working parent who needs a way to pump during Zoom calls or while running errands. Although it’s more expensive than other pumps, we prefer it to other similarly priced products and highly recommend it if you can get on board with the cost.

When I tested this pump with the cups it had less suction and ranked #18. But when I tested it with a traditional flange, it came in at 273 mmHg. That is almost 100 more mmHg suction with a traditional flange instead of the cups! So it’s notable that the pump itself actually performed quite well but the cups didn’t perform as well. There are lots of benefits to pumping, most of which we have previously covered throughout this article. However, there are also a few side effects which some mums experience. One of the most common side effects is causing pain in your breasts or nipples. If you are using the wrong setting, you are in danger of damaging your breasts. Always ensure you are starting at the lowest setting and slowly working your way up. Is it OK to just pump and not breastfeed? Flaherman VJ, Narayan NR, Hartigan-O'Connor D, Cabana MD, McCulloch CE, Paul IM. The effect of early limited formula on breastfeeding, readmission, and intestinal microbiota: A randomized clinical trial. The Journal of Pediatrics. 2018;196. doi:10.1016/j.jpeds.2017.12.073My test came in at 181 mmHg. The company claims 240 mmHg. That’s not too far off, but definitely less than what the company says it should be. Another factor that contributed to us not testing this pump at work is the cleaning process. Elvie emphasizes letting the diaphragm air dry to avoid malfunctioning, which sometimes took hours to do and wasn’t always practical. However, we think this pump is fantastic for wearing around the house because it allowed us to do chores, cook, and unload the dishwasher while wearing it. Setting up this breast pump is fairly simple when following along the assembly instructions included. The instructions are super clear and each side only has three parts to assemble and clean. We actually thought there’d be more parts to it, and were pleasantly surprised at how streamlined the entire process is. Once everything is put together, you snap the breast shield onto the cups and once you hear the resounding snap sound you know it’s secure and ready to use. After, connect the tubing to the tops of the cups and the other end to the motor unit and voila!
