About this deal

This book looks through kids' eyes. Kids don't want to be dumped by their parents for two months. City kids don't necessarily want to go to the country. They don't want to leave their friends to stay with people they hardly know. This book respects that children have their own lives independent of their family life. I like that. Byars was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, on August 7, 1928. Unlike many of the characters in her books, Byars grew up in a normal, loving family. Her father was an engineer and worked as a bookkeeper in a cotton mill. He was stern and hardworking and had a strong sense of humor. Her mother was a lively woman who loved acting and music. Byars's sister, Nancy, two years older, was sometimes an inspiration and sometimes an evil nemesis. The bulk of a fox’s diet is made up of meat protein, so the best things to feed your local foxes are cooked or raw meat, or tinned dog food. They are also fond of peanuts, fruit and cheese. The poem comprises six stanzas of four lines each, known as quatrains. There is no regular rhyme scheme, but consonant rhyme scattered here and there, for example, for example, ‘live’ and ‘move’ in stanza one. There is no set metre but enjambed line ends create rhythm that imitates the sinuous movement of the fox.

The Thought-Fox’ is probably the most famous modern poem about poetic inspiration, and one of Ted Hughes' most popular. The fox and the poem merge, both products of the poet’s imagination.

I also thought the way the author described the inner thoughts of the protagonist was really good, and reminded me of just the sort of things I would catch myself thinking when I was younger (and maybe occasionally today too, if I'm being honest). The tone was just right, and they were just outlandish enough to be realistic children's thoughts. There is some controversy around feeding the foxes in your garden, but if you feed them in the right way, they can bring a huge amount of joy to your family. This week we are looking at two words which may be confused by learners of English: scarce and scarcely. Improve your English with Collins. The tone is dream-like and mysterious; the imagined time is midnight, clearly a time of creativity. The poet skillfully uses soft alliterative consonants, like ’m’s in the first line and the hard ’s’s and ’t’s in the last stanza. Carefully placed punctuation, for example semi-colons in stanzas one and two, controls the pace. For our fourth book review, I decided to read a book called Midnight Fox by Betsy Byars. The book is a fiction, adventure book and I chose to read it because the plot was really intriguing to me.

i enjoyed Tom and Petie’s friendship but overall, it wasn’t enough to save the book. as well as that, i feel like there wasn’t enough exploration into Tom and his fascination with the midnight fox which i was so excited for :( this also meant that the overarching “wider meaning” of the book got lost. This week we are looking at two words which may be confused by learners of English: produce and product. Improve your English with Collins. I cannot exactly explain my fascination with this fox. It was as if I had just learned a new and exciting game that I wanted to play more than anything else in the world. It was like when Petie Burkis first learned to play Monopoly, and that was all he wanted to do – – just play Monopoly. One time he followed me around the yard on his knees, begging me to play with him. And one time he made his sister play with him and he did everything for her – – collected her money, moved her piece, paid her rent. All she did was sit there reading a magazine. Although The Midnight Fox has not won any major awards in its own right, it is often described as Betsy Byars most enduring work. In her career, she wrote over sixty-five books which have been translated into nineteen languages. In 1987 Byars received the Regina Medal for lifetime achievement from the Catholic Library Association. Foxes can make around 28 different sounds. Despite this, they are a mostly silent animal; calling is largely during the winter breeding season. You are most likely to hear one of two distinctive fox noises: the male dog fox’s barking call and the female vixen’s chilling scream.

The descriptions of settings and of country values are coherent, vivid and unusual. A city reader is taken into the smells and tastes of the country. Vixens sound more like screaming humans! Their sharp ‘Woooo!’ rises and then tails off across the landscape, telling male foxes they are ready to breed. Listen to a vixen call. For city boy Tom, adjusting to life in the country is hard. But, when he discovers a fox and her cubs living in the forest, he is fascinated and determined to protect them. Then Uncle Fred decides to go after the fox. Will Tom save her and her family in time?
