So she put on the paper bag and followed the dragon. You could talk about what is happening in the illustrations to highlight the sequence of different actions and to help your child connect the events. For example, you could say, “Look, in this picture Elizabeth says, “Magnificent!” so that the dragon breathes fire again, until he has none left.” Determined to save her prince, she sets out, wearing only a paper bag, to follow the trail of destruction left by the dragon. I know this was written nearly thirty years ago, but certainly even then it was distressing for a dragon to destroy hundreds of trees, and potentially harm lots of wildlife living there. Read some other alternative traditional tales such a The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig by Eugene Trivizas and Helen Oxenbury or Revolting Rhymes by Roald Dahl. I think I’ll have to get her creations ideas written down more often as this princess is super sweet and great for practising scissor skills. The brave, clever girl who doesn't wait for someone to come rescue her but courageously solves her own problem. She was really pleased that I chose to copy her princess craft for kids and share it here too – apparently my one is the queen and her’s is the princess. Before starting the story, you might ask your child, “Do you remember the big problem in this story?” If she doesn’t, that’s okay. You can remind her by saying, “The problem in this story is that the dragon took Prince Ronald and Princess Elizabeth has to get past the dragon to save the prince.” During the reading, when your child points to or comments about something happening in the book, use it as an opportunity to highlight an element of CSPAR: Questions for Philosophical Discussion » Summary The Paper Bag Princess turns traditional fairy tales on their heads to raise questions about gender roles, identity, and happiness. Is being a boy or being a girl an identity that comes with specific roles? If so, are these roles only because we say so?
