About this deal

A preload adjusting plug in the base of the seatpost tunes the suspension. Numbers one to five are printed within its thread pitch and relate to rider weight and the spring(s). Turn the preload plug to the required position and fit the post. According to Ergon, it provides up to 20mm of rearward deflection, but the exact amount will vary depending on the weight of the rider and the force of the impacts encountered. The Thudbuster LT (Long Travel) has a larger linkage system than the ST with 3” (76mm) of travel via two barrel-shaped active elastomers. Cane Creek specifies that it’s usable for mountain bikes, tandems, tourers, and everything in between. The LT has a maximum rider weight of 250lbs. Suspension seatposts allow you to pedal while seated on terrain that normally requires standing up. Compared to a rigid post on the same bumpy climb, I find that my legs often feel fresher simply because I’m standing up less. The patented Dual-Position Seatpost lets you ride a true aero position on a standard road bike, without sacrificing your normal road position. And you can switch between road and aero positions on-the-fly while riding so you can always choose the best riding position for every part of your ride.

If using clip-on aerobars on a regular road bike, it certainly makes sense to have two different saddle positions available. The RedShift Dual-Position Seatpost achieves this goal extremely well and is very well designed and manufactured. I would be curious to know what you would think of Fred Bars ( https://www.sirenbicycles.com/products/fred-bars ) as a possible alternative to this seatpost. This air spring system has been tested by GravelBikes.cc to be much less active than other suspension seatposts, but it’ll still take the edge off those bigger hits, and performs well on gravel roads too. Given that cyclists often have 60 to 70% of their body weight on their saddle, I don’t know if there is any other component that offers as much of an improvement in ride comfort (assuming you’ve already optimised your tyre width and pressure).

A telescopic post is usually considered inferior, as the angle that it compresses is different from the direction of force coming from the rear wheel – resulting in a less reactive suspension system. Telescopic posts also end up with a shorter saddle-to-pedal distance when you are riding over bumps.

Verdict

Deflection is the total movement that a seatpost will move after an impact. A seatpost with more deflection will reduce the fatigue on your body as it protects you from harder jolts like unexpected potholes or dirt road corrugations. It’ll also allow you to keep pedalling through particularly bumpy terrain. Some people report increased comfort when using the forward position of this post due to the opening of the hip angle causing less compression in that region. Because I use relatively short cranks (165 mm cranks with a 705 mm saddle height), my knee doesn’t come up particularly high (which I find helps to prevent knee problems) and so my hip angle is not really an issue regardless of my saddle position – it’s always quite open. Will my saddle bag fit with the Dual-Position Seatpost? Most standard strap-based saddle bags will fit the dual-position seatpost without issue.

This is simply due to the higher percentage of weight on your saddle. Conversely, if you have more weight on your hands because you ride in a more sporty position, you can get away with less suspension travel. Best Suspension Seatposts Coil Sprung Its two-bolt saddle clamp remains level atop a parallelogram linkage pivoting on dry-lube bushings. When weight is added to the post a link compresses the internal spring(s), creating user-adjustable sag, which Redshift recommends should be around 20 per cent of the 35mm total travel. is our standard size, but we added the 280, 400, 450mm to allow for a wider range of fits. Measure your current seatpost from the clamp collar to the saddle rail: However, would you recommend the Redshift post to be used on a roadbike? I ride lots of hills from 5-15% on decent and on broken tarmac. Continuing their 20-year suspension seatpost legacy, Cane Creek recently announced the all-new, fourth generation Thudbuster ST (Short Travel). Designed with touring, commutes, and e-bike trips in mind, it features 50mm of travel—up from 33mm on the original Thudbuster ST—to smooth out bumps and bounces on multi-surface rides. Building on the original Thudbuster’s parallel linkage, it also got a redesign for a higher rider weight limit (now up to 330 pounds), increased durability, and more travel.Aerobars] How do aerobars affect my bike fit? This is a really important question, and it's one that we've spent a lot of time thinking about here at Redshift Sports, so get ready for a long answer!

Ergon’s one-size-fits-most approach is simpler, with fewer moving parts, and is significantly lighter than its rivals.Meanwhile, the elastomer Cane Creek eeSilk offers around half as much vibration improvement, however, it’s worth noting that it only has around half the suspension travel (20mm). It’d be interesting to see how a longer-travel elastomer seatpost compares here.
