In every American conflict since World War Two, military dog teams have contributed. Yet their accomplishments are often overlooked. The impact of military dogs may seem minuscule, but not if you happen to be one of the dozens perhaps hundreds of American soldiers who owes his life to one, the contributions of canines meant literally everything.

Those are far from the only breeds of pup who have used in military service and just one of the many roles assigned to the enlisted K-9s and military dog breeds. When you dig into the history, it’s amazing what a wide range of pups have performed a wide range of tasks in military service. From large to small, muscular and burly, doggos went above and beyond the call of duty to fulfill the missions they were tasked with. There is no surprise here – dogs are known as loyal and brave companions, even in war.Lots of dog breeds were used during World War One, but the most popular type of dogs were medium-sized, intelligent and trainable breeds. Two in particular were used because of their superior strength, agility, territorial nature and trainability; Doberman Pinscher’s and GSDs, both native to Germany. Doberman’s were used because they are both highly intelligent and easily trainable, and possess excellent guarding abilities. Being of slight frame and extremely agile, their dark coat allowed them to slip undetected through terrain without alerting the enemy. They were employed most frequently in Germany. German Shepherd’s were used also because of their strength, intelligence and trainability, being eager to please their masters. Other breeds associated with WWI were smaller breeds such as terriers, who were most often employed as ‘ratters’; dogs trained to hunt and kill rats in the trenches. But both sides in World War One soon realised the muddy ground, barbed wire and machine guns made it too difficult to use horses for fighting. The Komoot route deviates off the path to get a better view of the waterfall, which I would only recommend doing in good weather. Many dogs love to swim. Seriously, think of the term ‘Doggie Paddle’ and wonder where that came from for a minute. The majority of dogs who love to swim do so for a couple of different reasons.
