Lang spent much of his professional time engaged in political activism. He was a staunch socialist and active in opposition to the Vietnam War, volunteering for the 1966 anti-war campaign of Robert Scheer (the subject of his book The Scheer Campaign). [ citation needed] Lang later quit his position at Columbia in 1971 in protest over the university's treatment of anti-war protesters. Roquette, Peter (1976). Jorgenson, Jay; Lang, Serge (2009). Heat Eisenstein series on SL n(C). Memoirs of the American Mathematical Society. Vol.201. doi: 10.1090/memo/0946. ISBN 978-0-8218-4044-3. MR 2548067. The basic topics covered doesn't necessarily mean that the book will be easy; this was my first introduction to proofs, and to trying to create my own (which I often failed at doing). However, even if I knew most of the material already (like that a negative number multiplied by a negative number results in a positive number), I had never known the reasoning behind why this was true. The logical approach presented taught me a different, more effective way to learn mathematics. Lang even has an entire section (somewhere after chapter 3, I think) where he simply covers logic and some notation, to help the reader get a better grasp of the idea.a b Lang, Serge (1981). The File: Case Study in Correction (1977-1979). New York, NY: Springer New York. doi: 10.1007/978-1-4613-8145-7. ISBN 978-1-4613-8145-7 . Retrieved 4 May 2022. Even then, one might say that full rigor hasn't been achieved until one has presented a way to formalize the concept of proof to such an extent that the correctness of any given proof can be verified by an algorithm. (Such formal proofs are almost unreadable to humans because they are full of symbols.) This is accomplished in books on logic. Jorgenson, Jay; Lang, Serge (2008). The heat kernel and theta inversion on SL 2(C). Springer Monographs in Mathematics. New York: Springer. doi: 10.1007/978-0-387-38032-2. ISBN 978-0-387-38031-5. MR 2449649. Libro di testo completo e interessante, scritto da un matematico davvero in gamba, che sa come veicolare concetti base e avanzati in maniera unica, tramite svariati esempi e diverse dimostrazioni.

Basic Mathematics by Serge Lang | Waterstones

Does Basic Mathematics give a suitably rigorous treatment of algebra and geometry topics covered in high school? Does it prepare the reader for more difficult texts like Calculus by Spivak? I also found the trigonometry chapter to be too brief so, Is there a need for a supplemental book for trigonometry with Basic Mathematics? On the question of whether Lang will prepare you adequately for Spivak, the answer is maybe. It's better than most books for this, because it does devote considerable attention to proofs. On the other hand, it doesn't develop a high level of computational skill in important areas. That's one reason why in my answer here
