Lang spent much of his professional time engaged in political activism. He was a staunch socialist and active in opposition to the Vietnam War, volunteering for the 1966 anti-war campaign of Robert Scheer (the subject of his book The Scheer Campaign). The basic topics covered doesn't necessarily mean that the book will be easy; this was my first introduction to proofs, and to trying to create my own (which I often failed at doing). However, even if I knew most of the material already (like that a negative number multiplied by a negative number results in a positive number), I had never known the reasoning behind why this was true. The logical approach presented taught me a different, more effective way to learn mathematics. Does Basic Mathematics give a suitably rigorous treatment of algebra and geometry topics covered in high school? Does it prepare the reader for more difficult texts like Calculus by Spivak? I also found the trigonometry chapter to be too brief so, Is there a need for a supplemental book for trigonometry with Basic Mathematics? On the question of whether Lang will prepare you adequately for Spivak, the answer is maybe. It's better than most books for this, because it does devote considerable attention to proofs. On the other hand, it doesn't develop a high level of computational skill in important areas. That's one reason why in my answer here
