In 1980, Joy's young daughter Kate mysteriously flees the family home. Fifteen years later, Kate's own daughter Sabine leaves London in search of grandparents she has never known. When the family is finally reunited, hidden tensions come to the surface, uncovering a dark secret which has been deeply buried for years . . . Moyes studied at Royal Holloway, University of London. She won a bursary financed by The Independent newspaper to study journalism at City University and subsequently worked for The Independent for 10 years. In 2001 she became a full time novelist.

I wanted to know if things would get better after the emotional upheaval that loomed over them like dark clouds that nearly sent the entire family in the brink of destruction. I wanted to know more. I chose this book for my 2014 Book Bingo challenge, for the square "the first book of a favorite author". I've read quite a few novels by Moyes and I loved "Me Before You" so she comes as close to a favorite author as anyone else does. Definitely not JoJo Moyes best work. This book was really hard to get in to as it just constantly jumped around. It felt like a lot of effort reading it. The story definitely improved in the last quarter, however the ending was rather disappointing it felt like a last minute ending just to finish it off. Here the narrator -- married, with children -- enjoys a brief blast of the past and glimpse of how things went for Komei, but at the end is able to return to his staid domestic arrangement -- a nice way of rounding out the collection. Kate's going through a bit of a rough patch and decides to send her sixteen year old daughter, Sabine, to stay with her parents in Ireland while she sorts things out. Her mother and father, Joy and Edward, take Sabine into their home despite the fact that their relationship with Kate has been very strained for many years.

Komei even introduces his old friend to bartender Senda -- "a character in a lot of my stories", he explains. Moyes' novel Foreign Fruit won the Romantic Novelists' Association (RNA) Romantic Novel of the Year in 2004. So also when he introduces the "Sage of Shinjuku", who: "knows everything about its night life, every bar and club in the district [...] He's not a fortune-teller, but he has a discerning eye", to whom many locals go for advice, but who ultimately proves not to be as reliable as everyone had thought. Sheltering Rain" is not a Romance, not in my estimation, anyway, but, as it turns out, it is a LOVE STORY, a love story of the truest sort. It is a love story of a family, of mothers and daughters, of failed love and love that lasted the test of time. Its a story to teach us about the illusion of "perfect" that we believe we see in others, and a story about finding perfection amongst the broken reality of family life.Sheltering Rain is the debut novel of Jojo Moyes. I wasn’t that surprised when I noticed that the Jojo mojo had already been there all along. This author comforts me as reader. I feel cocooned whenever I read one of her books. Does it make any sense when you feel that the book is giving you a virtual hug? It's like comfort food for the mind. Be it predictable and ordinary sometimes, that doesn’t diminish the capable and touching storytelling. The characters are extremely realistic as if it’s mandatory to feel some sort of affinity to some of them with all their shortcomings and internal struggles. Moyes, a young Brit, again proves herself a worthy successor to Maeve Binchy and Rosamund Pilcher with her second novel (after Sheltering Rain), a warmhearted Continue reading » This changes at a party held in honor of Queen Elizabeth’s coronation. Joy gets embarrassingly drunk and ends up meeting Edward, a young naval officer who will become the love of her life. After only two meetings, they decide to marry.

Gigi is the offspring of The Deal’s main couple, Garrett and Hannah. Garrett and Hannah’s story came out in 2015,… English–Arabic English–Bengali English–Catalan English–Czech English–Danish English–Hindi English–Korean English–Malay English–Marathi English–Russian English–Tamil English–Telugu English–Thai English–Turkish English–Ukrainian English–VietnameseI liked all of the characters in this book and would have enjoyed spending more time with them. I especially would have liked reading more about Joy and Edward's life when they were first married and living in Hong Kong. That portion of the book reminded me of 'The Painted Veil' by M Somerset Maugham. I had to force my-self to finish this novel. If this was the first novel I had read by Jojo Moyes it would have been the last. Me Before You has redeemed Jojo Moyes for me. Regreso a Irlanda es un retrato de familia que nos cuenta la historia de tres generaciones de mujeres de la misma familia y su narrativa va saltando en el tiempo y en el espacio. En sus páginas iniciales nos transporta hasta Hong Kong por la coronación de la reina Elizabete II, a medida que nos adentramos en la trama pasaremos temporadas en Londres y en la parte rural de Irlanda, donde viven en el momento presente las referidas protagonistas. The focus of the story then shifts to rural Ireland in the late 1990s. Joy is now a grandmother and Sabine, the child of her estranged daughter, has come to stay. Sabine’s mother Kate is coming out of yet another bad relationship and has essentially dumped Sabine at Joy’s farm while she tries to get her life together.

One of the things I loved about this book as with many of the authors novels is that you get a perspective from all three lead characters and a switch in time-lines from the past to the present day. This is such an effective tool in getting to know the characters as a reader and provides explanations for things that have happened which make them the person they are in modern times. I think I loved and got irritated by all three women in equal measures due to the consequences of certain actions in their pasts but I think one of the signs of a good story is that the characters should bring out some raw emotion in the reader. By the end of the novel, we have seen a change in Joy, Kate and Sabine for the better due to their experiences, but I also enjoyed that the author did not try and sugar-coat their lives in that it will be a “happy ever after” for them all, and that there would still be challenges ahead.
